stop the neighbors dogs from digging into my yard?
The other neighbor's 4 (yes, 4) Labs dug in to my yard yesterday afternoon, pooped every where (which I did step in thankyouverymuch), dug up my newly laid bark, and just took over my yard. I tried to get in touch with the neighbors to come get their dogs and of course they weren't home. The dogs hung out for almost 3 hours.
Finally, the W (who was a real peach) said that they would "come get them when he H came home in an hour or so" and I went ballistic and told her that I was not a doggy day care. She came over 10 minutes later for the dogs.
Anyway, these are the second set of neighbors that have dogs that have dug in to my yard. I'm really tired of this shiznit and before I do something irrational and get arrested, how do I stop this from happening again?
Re: Help before I get arrested. How do I...
line the fence with red pepper flakes. it'll bother the dogs nose when they sniff around and will avoid your yard.
hope you called the cops! they "broke and enter" and also vandalized your yard.

I've lined the fence with pepper flakes and they still keep coming!
I called animal control and they were closed.
maybe try different types of pepper? i would call the police, not just animal control.

How about regular, ground black pepper? As I recall, it tends to make people sneeze. And I agree with Jenn, I would call the cops if it happens again.

I called the non-emergency number first and the police said that they wouldn't come out bc it was an animal control issue.
Maybe I'll just mix a whole bunch of peppers together and try that.
next time try the phrase "trespassing"....see if that works?

I don't know that I'd threaten the sue, but DEFINITELY send them a bill for the damages!! WTF with "come get them in an hour or so" when she was fugging home?
Electric fence?
Have you looked into the codes to see if they can legally have 4 large dogs there?
ditto this and good gracious!! I can't believe those people. And yes, I'm not sure what makes them think it's totally ok for their dogs to do this and then walk away. If my dogs did this I would be offering $ asap and would be extremely embarrassed. And also ditto wondering if they are allowed to have 4 dogs.

Not sure of your exact location but.. this is on King County's website - which could help you with your threat. I mean not that you would want their animals taken away, but you could let them know you know the rules.
"Also, in most areas, if zoning allows you to possess more than three pets, a hobby kennel license is required from King County Animal Control."
In the neighbors defense, after H banished me inside for fear that I was going to turn in to a shrieking banshee at them, the H was really nice to my H.
My H said that he was super apologetic and said that he'd come back over this afternoon to fill in the dirt, fix the fence and put back my bark. So, because of all of this my H doesn't want to be azzhats to them and wants to try to keep it civil as possible.
I talked to Animal Control this morning and where we live they're allowed to have the 4 dogs. She even told me you can have up to 5 animals in Auburn, but most of King County is 3 animals.
Good call on the electric fence though. I'm going to look in to that.
Thanks everyone!
critical details you left out of the OP
Since they're being nice it sounds like you can just focus on figuring out a way to prevent them from getting in.

I'd be careful with the electric fence...you'd either have to have the dogs wearing something (like with an "invisible fence") or you'd have to have a fence that's electrically charged, right? I could see potentially issues with that (like, if some little kid grabbed onto it).
Isn't there some kind sound device you can use that works with motion detectors? Like, it's a high enough frequency that only the dogs can hear it, and it'll go off if they cross into your yard? (Maybe I dreamed that......)

"Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass. It's about learning to dance in the rain."
they have high pitched things to stop dogs from barking, but when we tried to use one for a neighbor's dog it didn't work and it drove us crazy because we could hear it (and by 'we' I mostly mean my sister and I because we have 'young' ears, not sure at what point people stop being able to hear it).
It's annoying that you have to spend time doing this since it really should be their responsibility, ugh!

Touching an electric fence is uncomfortable, but not dangerous. You'd want to warn your guests, and probably turn it off if kids are playing back there, but it's just a small shock. But they are ugly...
You could bury chicken wire, with a portion of it exposed and attached to your wood fence. What would work better, though, is to have the neighbors bury it (which seems like a reasonable request), so that it goes down about a foot and under their yard a couple feet out from the fence, again attached to (their side of) the fence. That way the dogs can't dig out.
Really, though, people should keep their dogs in the house -- they shouldn't be outside unsupervised.

no they wouldn't be *that* effective..one swift kick knocks out a section..and if the dogs jump kick the cactus in the head, the entire thing would die.
