Lions, Tigers, and Bears OH MY
Anyone live in Columbus near the wild animal outbreak?
I feel so sad for the animals. They've already shot something like 30 of them as a precaution, and there are others still on the loose. And seriously, who keeps these kinds of animals at their house (some reports state it was an exotic pet farm, but I'm not sure).

ditto. when animals escape from zoos, they typically tranquilize and capture them. it makes me so sad that they're killing them.

I was thinking the same thing why not just tanquilize them?
I haven't heard about the story until just now. I am going to have to go do some reading.
I am so upset over this. An article I read said that you can't tranqulize animals at night but I'm not sure why that is. My parents live in Columbus and my SIL's boyfriend actually lives in Zainesville. I haven't heard from him though, but it's got to be pretty crazy to be in the area on lockdown.
And yeah, who keeps these kind of animals around?
I live in Columbus, but thankfully not anywhere near all this craziness. Zanesville is about 50 miles east of Columbus.
It is an exotic animal farm. The owner was released from prison on September 30th (for firearm possession). Latest news reports say that he opened all of the cages and then killed himself. Here's hoping that this incident sparks some policy reformation, so that people cannot have these exotic animal farms any longer.
Who was taking care of the animals while he was gone? This makes me really sad.
I think with the tranquilizing its a matter of safety and getting the animals out of the public asap . When tranquilizing, you have to have the correct dose for the animal. Also when they are tranqed they don't go down right away and then there is a matter of finding the animal as quickly as possible before the tranq wears off and loading the animal safely for transportation. Its really a job for professionals. Local law enforcement isn't usually trained in this type of thing so they don't have the prof man power to handle tranquilizing 50 loose dangerous animals and quickly before the public is hurt. Then there is the question on where do the animals go once they are tranqed and captured. These aren't your typical wild animals, they are use to people feeding them and that will be their first source when they get hungry if they aren't found. Im not saying that Im okay with them tranqing the animals, just that I think the decision was made to get these animals out of the public asap. The article below said that by the time professionals (for tranquilizing) were on location they were only able to save a few animals.
Its all around a sad situation. Ohio (along with many other states) doesn't have laws regulating ownership of exotics. People can purchase these animals online, and there is a HUGE exotic animal auction located in Ohio every year. I have personally been to it- not to purchase these types of animals of course, but because a friend of mine was looking to get a herd of Scottish Highland Cattle. You wouldn't believe how easy it is for someone to buy a baby bear, tiger, or lion with no questions asked. Its sickening. Because of the neglict of people (both the owner and bad US exotic ownership laws) these animals have to pay the price.
