Do you have a career?

Would you consider yourself having a career or a job?

Do you feel like there is a difference?

Re: Do you have a career?

  • I have neither, currently.  Before Evie, though, I didn't have a career... I just worked so we could pay bills.  I'm taking advantage of this time being home with her so I can figure out what I want to do when I "grow up".  I eventually want to go back to work but I want it be something that I can enjoy and grow into... and not just another job that I dread going to.

I really think there's a difference between a job and a career... I know some people view it as the same thing.  I feel like a career is work you enjoy doing, so much so that you don't even consider it working.  And a job is a job... and just that.

  • Yep, I have a career.

And yes, there is a difference.

By going to law school I launched into my career- there's only one field that pays enough for me to pay back my loans, so I'm here for the next 30+ years.

  • Currently I have neither!

When I was working, it was just a job...definitely not a career. (I was an executive assistant).

  • I have a job. I could turn it into a career, but I don't want to be in sales forever!
  • Would you consider yourself having a career or a job? I consider it a Job

Do you feel like there is a difference? Most def, I feel careers are for things you love doing, room to grow and be at for a long time

  • I have a career- however- I am not sure its my forever career. There are lots of parts and pieces to my career so it leaves me plenty of opportunity for change and growth. I used to work jobs- but I finally had my place.
  • I feel I have a career (social work). My current position is not one I want to be in forever, and I am still not earning hours towards my LICSW.

  • I have a career in the sense that I absolutely love my job and love coming to work everyday. I'm not sure it qualifies though bc I didn't get a masters in it Wink
Baby, you've got the sort of eyes that tell me tales...

  • I would say that now that I'm at the company I'm at: Yes, I have a career.

At my last company, it was definitely just a job. It was a small company and there was absolutely no possibility of growth.  The accounting department was really small and in the 5 years I worked there, they only added 1 new position. I also reported directly to the CFO, so there was no where "up" to move.

At this company, there is a ton of growth opportunities. Also, since we are being IPO'd, they are adding positions left & right and in the 1+ year I have been there, I've already been moved into a senior position/title. My boss (a director) also knows that people don't like to stay in the same position forever and so he is always trying to give me more responsibilities once I master the other ones.

  • I think technically I have a career.  But when you hate it as much as I do right now, it certainly makes it feel more like a just a job.  Right now it's only function is to pay the bills.  that's it.

  • I have a career. I think so anyway.

I went to school for something specific and worked my way up in that field. Now I'm expanding on what I already know to further myself in the field.

    I consider that a career.

  • I would definitely I'm on the path towards having my career.  I've been working as a paralegal for the last 7 years, and this is what I want to do short of being an attorney, and I'm in the process of achieving that goal, so yes, I consider this my career.

The difference?  I see a job as an occupation one has that isn't where they ideally want to be.  More of a permanent fix rather than a lifetime achievement.  If that makes sense.

  • It definitely has all the characteristics of a career, but the only thing missing is that I don't love it.  So it feels like a job.  I definitely feel like there's a difference.  A career has possibilities and is something you enjoy doing.  A job is something that pays the bills.

  • My job is just a job.  I can't be in insurance advertising compliance forever. I want a career though, more specifically, I really want to be a labor and delivery nurse.  Depending on how the next two years go, I may apply to nursing school for an accelerated BSN.
