Clothes Organization

Maybe I should post this in cleaning & organizing but I don't know them so I'll try here first.

How do you all have your dressers / closets organized.  I struggle with this a lot.  My biggest issue is with pants and sweaters.  I like the idea of folding sweaters on my closet shelves but it looks great when you first do it and then you want a sweater on the bottom and everything falls over, blah blah.

My closet is in DIRE need of cleaning and organizing so I'm looking for suggestions.  I will buy whatever I need.  Do I need shelves, do I need hooks, etc.

Right now my dresser has one drawer for each:
Bras, Underwear/Socks, PJs and tank tops (I layer a lot and have a ton).  The last two drawers are a mish-mosh of "tops" - shirts and sweaters and "bottoms" - jeans, khakis, yoga pants, etc.

Closet is a holy mess and most won't stay except for the few hanging clothes and, at the very top, my purse collection.

So, organizers, any suggestions?  I am seriously thisclose to hiring an organizer / closet expert to come help me out.  it's bad.

Re: Clothes Organization

  • Our apartment had fabulous walk in closets ... I mean FABULOUS! Our house, not so much. In fact no walk ins, so this has been a major issue for me for the last 3 years. I went from color coordinated and shoe racks to a whole lot 'o chaos.

Like you, I like things folded, jeans, sweaters - but then they fall over, get wadded and shoved to the back, etc.

So in our house EVERYTHING gets hung up. The only thing in drawers are underwear, socks, pj's and cami's. I get the closet in the bedroom, DH gets the closet in the office. My closet pants are all drap hung on one side, tops on the other. The shelves hold t-shirts, and out of season clothes.

  • Here's a few links to some pictures of what we did to our closet (before any clothes got put back in). My side and DH's side. (I use the term DH's side loosely...about 75% of the closet is actually my stuff Stick out tongue).

I don't have a picture of our closet with clothes actually in it, and I'm not taking one now because my closet is a hot mess. Embarrassed I just keep throwing the clean clothes on the floor or leaving them in the laundry baskets, not acutally hanging my stuff up. That might be my project for Sunday when I get home from Philly...

Anyway, I have my cardigans, dress shirts, and suit coats hanging on the top rack, t-shirts, nice sleeveless tops, and pants/skirts hanging on the bottom rack. On the shelves I have my nice sweaters, tank tops, jeans, and workout pants. In the drawers I have my jewlery, bras, undies, and socks. Under the drawers I keep my workout tees and other old tees that I rarely wear. The very top shelf on my side is where I put all my out of season clothes (sweatshirts/fleece in the summer, shorts/capris in the winter). The top of DH's side holds all my purses.

On DH's side I have my shoe shelf under the hanging bar and all of my dresses are on that side. He doesn't really use the closet much, so he hasn't even put shelves in yet. His drawers hold undies/socks and shirts.

  • OMG Beth that closet is awesome.  Mine is teeeeny in comparison.  I went to the 'help me design my closet' thing on containerstore.com and all you can really do in my closet is one or two hanging bars.  Gee, thanks!

Bummer! I had a small closet growing up (that I had to share with my sister) so I feel your pain.

The big closets were a huge selling feature for our house. It's only a 2 br, but each room has a walk in closet and we have 4 other closets in the house. I totally bugged DH for a long time to redo our master bedroom closet. It originally just had 2 shelves and a hanging bar all the way around. Now if I could just keep the closet clean...

  • It's probably easier to say what isn't hung up. I have a drawer for underwear, socks, bras, and t-shirts.

I also take up most of the chest of drawers with a drawer for jeans, camisoles, skirts/shorts, and pajama pants.

    Happiest place on Earth!

  • I thought of you while I was getting dressed in my closet this morning :) I actually have a long dresser in my closet, under the rod. This allows me to hang tops above it, and then have all the drawers. I have actually always done this as a space saver. Growing up I shared a room with my sister and there wasn't room to have a dresser in the room, to in our closet they went. Since it's hidden, you could easily find one on craigs list for cheap. Mine is not in the best shape but works!
