Steam mop that isn't a dud??

My husband and I have an apartment with all hardwood floors, and I've been doing a ton of research on Consumer Reports, Amazon, Target (which has surprisingly extensive reviews on several of their vacuum products), Bed Bath & Beyond, and more, and it seems like there just aren't any good steam mops out there. Even the Eureka EnviroSteamer, which seems to come out on top in just about all the reviews I've checked, still has a huge number of people saying that theirs died after 10 washes, a few months, less than a year, etc. We would love a steam mop because it seems to keep the floors cleaner longer than simply vacuuming, but we don't want to waste $60-100 on something that won't even last until our first anniversary.

We have a Swiffer with the dry pads that we use for a quick sweep-up when we don't want to break out the vacuum, but we don't want to use the wet Swiffer pads because of the chemicals (we have three cats, two of them less than a year old).

Does anyone know of a steam mop that is reliable and reasonably priced?

Re: Steam mop that isn't a dud??

  • I have a Haan mini steamer that I bought from QVC.  It had great reviews, and we love it.  I have only had it for about 3 months, but I have already cleaned my floors with it about a dozen times, and even steamed my mattress and pillows.

  • We have the Bissell Steam mop and LOVE it. I have had it for over a year. My mom also has one and has had it for 2+ years with no issues. She uses it all the time too, since all of her downstairs (2,000+ sq. ft.) is tile.

The key is to get their older one, not the newest one they offer. We bought the newest one when it came out a year or so back because it had a larger mop head and a longer cord, but it did NOT clean nearly as well as the original. Here is the one you need to buy: http://www.amazon.com/Bissell-Steam-Hard-Floor-Cleaner-1867-7/dp/B000RPVHZU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1319146301&sr=8-1

If some of the complaints about it failing bother you, just buy the extended warranty. I don't think it's much extra and it'll give you piece of mind. There are over 800 reviews for this one and it has 4/5 stars, which I think is pretty good.

  • I'm on my 2nd shark....first one worked fine but handle broke after almost 2 years....cost $30 to replace or there was a target gift card and rebate deal that made the newer model less than $100 so I splurged on it.  Different than older model, like older model better to an extent but does the same end job.  I have the one with the white tank for water.

  • I received a Shark steam mop as a gift and I absolutely love it!  Have had it for about a year now.  You have to be patient because it's not the quickest mopping method, but you don't have to worry about dripping dingy water from place to place either.  You have to go slow enough to allow the steam to do it's job as you mop.  If you have a spot with particles stuck to the floor it may take a few passes to release it, but for the most part I am very happy with the results.  I really could tell the difference the first time I used it. I had previously tried the strip and sponge mops but I was just never happy with it.  Because it's steam, not only does it dry SUPER fast, but it also sanitizes as you go.  We recently bought our first home and out kitchen and bathroom surfaces are tile.  I had to clean the grout and reseal it when we first moved it because of the stains from the cleaner the previous owner had used.  The steam mop doesn't discolor or stain the grout, you don't have to add cleaner, and the pads are machine washable!  I even used it on the linoleum and wood floors in our previous place.  I would definitely recommend the optional carpet glider, especially if you have area rugs, really does help lift off the top layer of dust and freshen up the rugs a bit.  The steam mop comes with 2 pads but I would recommend purchasing a couple extras, depending on how much hard floor surface you have.  Because it cleans so good, I go through both of my mop pads each time I mop.  My favorite part is that it's not a messy way to mop.  Fill the tank with just water, wait about 30 seconds or so, and start mopping!  Refill the tank and repeat if necessary then when you're done you just have to toss the mop pad in the washing machine!  The handle is height adjustable too, so whether you are on the shorter side or taller, you don't have to feel like you have to adjust to the size of the mop.  It's small and light weight so storing isn't a hassle either.  I haven't had the opportunity to try any other brands, but in general, I think steam mops were a wonderful invention!  Happy mopping!
  • I have the Eureka and it does the job.
  • I've had the Eureka Envirosteamer for about 2 years and love it. Works real well for me and I use it for ceramic tile and hardwood floors.
