Do I need a professional to clean mold on ceiling?

Hi ladies, I think this is my first post on this board but in need of some serious cleaning advice. After Hurricane/Tropical Storm Irene our apartment got a small amount of mold on the ceiling in the kitchen (not by the stove but above some cabinets).  It's a small patch of dark black mold. Our apt has high ceilings so I cannot reach it with a stepladder I would need to either borrow a big ladder to reach it or kind of just take a stab at using some kind of pole (i.e. swiffer) to reach it (but am worried if I dislodge it might be a kitchen hazard).  Should I get a professional to come here?  I told our landlord but he has not done anything about it.  Is this really hazardous?   Any advice would be greatly appreciated.  I have no idea how to go get rid of it.

Re: Do I need a professional to clean mold on ceiling?

  • Since you rent I would get your landlord to either clean it or tell them you will hire someone to do it and you will take the cost off your rent. Do you know if the mold is only on the surface or is it originating in the drywall in the ceiling from a leak? Either way they need to clean and possible remove the drywall if it isn't just surface mold.

  • I think your landlord is legally liable to take care of this and do it the proper way. Maybe he/she is not realizing how bad it is. I'd request they take care of it again and express just how bad it looks. You can clean with bleach and water but it could be deeper than just exterior and cause lots of issues down the road so needs a professional to look at it. (we've had lots of hurricanes here!)

  • What PP said! Something like that isn't your responsibility because you are renting.

  • Like the above posters have suggested, you definitely need to get the landlord out there ASAP to take a look at it and get it cleaned up. Also, if I were you I'd notify them via email so that you have record of notifying them (just in case they later claims you never told them about it).
