Snowsuit and boots for 1 year old
MIL is barking at me about getting Abe a snow suit. I'm not convinced that he will need one. He isn't walking and I know that doesn't mean he won't want to go in the snow. We are getting him a nice LL Bean jacket. I guess I just figured that if we get to the point where we think he wants to go out then we buy a pair of ski pants.
So. Did your one year old have a snow suit and use it?
Re: Snowsuit and boots for 1 year old
James was 1.5 last year for winter and yes, he had a jacket and ski pants and heavy duty boots. They go out just about everyday at daycare, and he needed the gear to stay warm and dry.
He had a real 1-piece snowsuit his first year and it barely got used. Last year he was much more mobile and we went out in the yard and played a few times in the snow, so I was glad to have everything we needed.
The pants and jacket I got at the consignment store, so they were inexpensive. The boots I did shell out for when Lamey Wellingham was having a sale so it wasn't so painful. I think I still spent $35-40 on good warm boots. I bought them big and I'm pretty sure James will wear them again this year. (His feet don't seem to grow- he's still in size 5 at 2.5!)
You're in a tough spot because he isn't mobile yet, but there's a good chance he will be by Feb-Mar. I'd make my decision based on how often daycare has them out in the elements. Even if he isn't walking, you want his feet to be really warm.
They won't take the babies out in the infant room and I don't think he will move up to the toddler room until March or April. I'm leaning toward snow pants. I can see myself taking him out in a sled. And I can see us going out for a short period of time at home but I don't love the cold and tend to cozy up by the fire with a snack.
This. I would rather be warm inside than out in the cold. Taylor isn't that much older than Abe. Last year she had a warm jacket and hat (which we got at the children's place on black friday, for half off, we paid $25 for it). No boots or anything like. I just made sure to dress her warmer on the bottom, like with fleece pants.
I scored a brand new LL Bean jacket and snow pants for $30 total at the end of the season. So, for winter 2012/2013 you could check the outlets for the year end deals. Just keep your receipts and LLB will let you bring it back the following winter if it doesn't fit. Doesn't help you now I know, but....
I agree that it is based mostly on what you do. If you're not an outdoor person, then buying a snowsuit would be a waste.
But for us, snowgear is a necessity. I spend time outside everyday, regardless of the weather. Therefore, even as a newborn, Adrian went outside daily...unless it was really, really nasty last winter (probably can count those days on one hand). He went cross country skiing, snowshoeing, walks outside, for rides in his little sled. I say buy the gear that matches your lifestyle. Don't feel you need to get the gear and use it if it's not your thing...enjoy the time now when he doesn't demand to make a snowman everyday through winter.
Here is Miss R's boots for this season - but we are in the snow ALL the time!

they know it's the law to go outside right?, unless there is 'bad weather' and the whole winter /= bad weather.
I would get still boots and snow pants of some kind for home use.
Last winter the boys were about 1.5 and were outside every day with MIL, they had a one piece snowsuit that MIL bought on sale plus a jacket and snowpants at our house...We bought them boots from LLBean... but they were walking and running by that point so it made more sense. I would definitely say go by what you think you will be doing this winter... and if you find that you want to take him out, then you can go out and buy a snowsuit or snowpants...
I will say, finding a snowsuit is near to impossible! MIL insists on having snowsuits for the boys and she makes a big deal about how hard it is to find them... I smile and nod and remind her that MANY places sell snowpants, for much cheaper than the stupid snowsuits she buys.
I can't imagine them taking eight babies outside. There are three under 4 months. If he was that age I would not want him outside in the cold. They also said that they try to keep the babies in the infant room because every time they go out the other kids want to touch them. I don't want other kids touching my kid.
