i used yarn to hang my son's artwork in his playroom. similar to that picture with the tiny clothespins. it looks cute!
pottery barn also has something similar (where i got the idea) if you want to buy it instead. i just thought i could do the same thing w. yarn, which was much cheaper.

what if you braided the yarn? it would be triple thickness so give it a little more umph on the walls.
i haven't even been crafty enough to think of these sorts of ideas so take my opinion with a grain (or 14) of salt.

It's not thick at all. Maybe the same as if you twirled 4 strands of "friendship bracelet thread" together.
I did pick up something very similar but I wonder if it will kink. It was cheap enough that I can experiment.

You could also check a fabric store and look at the cords they have on spools. Those would be stronger than twine or ribbon. Something like this:

Also to cover the eye hooks you could use those flat painted wood decorations they sell at Michaels and AC Moore. I can't find a pic online but I used turtles to cover the clothes pins that are holding Tommy's crib quilt on the wall. Or you could use wooden letters and use the baby's initials. I know you're going to be surprised in the delivery room so this would have to be done after BabyD gets here but it should be an easy enough thing to finish.
I've been meaning to get these from Ikea to hang things in Oliver's room (like prints and his "art" from school).

I have these in my son's room. He hangs his "legendary"
Pokemon cards from them. I do have to say that they look kind of cool hanging the way they do.
