New Nestie - Advice on Parkville

My husband and I are looking to buy our first home in Parkville.  We've looked at a couple houses and found some we really like, but we're not as familiar with the area - we're both from AA County.  It's so much cheaper up there, plus he works in Timonium and hopefully I'll be working up around there or in Baltimore soon (in DC right now, hate it!!  Anyone hiring :) ).

Is anyone familiar with Parkville?  Any advice?  Please :)  Our favorite is right off Harford Rd., pretty close to 695.

Re: New Nestie - Advice on Parkville

  • We live in Parkville, and we like it a lot.  MH works in Hunt Valley, and it takes him about 20 minutes to get to work.  You can get downtown in 25 minutes.

I think the area you are talking about is more "downtown" Parkville.  We are closer to Towson, but still considered Parkville.  We looked at some houses in the area you are describing but chose a different house for many reasons.

You can PM me if you want to talk more!

  • I live in Parkville, and like it. The schools are good.. There are parks closeby. Traffic is fine. Close to 695 (then 83 and 95 respectively). I don't feel like I'm far away from downtown or anything in Baltimore County. Plenty of good stores and restaurants (and bars).

My house is off Harford Rd (Hiss Ave), care to share the street you are looking at.

Do you have any questions about churches?

  • I kind of disagree with PP, downtown Parkville makes it sounds like super, like bad. Harford Rd is the main street of Parkville true. Perhaps if I knew what that person meant by downtown but to me it evokes something bad (like overpopulated or dangerous) and I don't find that to be true at all. In fact, I find many other areas call their area Parkville to avoid being associated with other areas that are probably actually closer to them then Parkville but whose names typically do evoke a negative reputation (the areas I'm thinking of are close to Towson)...it's a realtor thing really (like when the area of Canton seemed to magically grow in size over night).

I grew up in the area, and obviously have seen things "change". My bartender always talks about the hookers on Harford Rd. I've never seen one, but I believe they exist. I've seen groups of young gentlemen all wearing matching outfits (gangs?). I had my car stolen from Oakleigh apartments (this is in Parkville). My parents live in a set of row homes that has remained an awesome area...but my aunt/friends live in another set not to far away that aren't so good.

I feel for the most part, as you drive around, things are clean, not super littered, no trash in the alleys/gutters. I feel like most people are home owners that care for their property. I even live near the Kings Ridge Apartments and feel that it's all still a good area (whereas people always told me "you don't want to live that close to apartments")

I guess I can share with you good and bad. Please feel free to ask specific questions?

  • There are better parts of Parkville than others but the area you seem to be looking at (Woodcroft it sounds like) is a cute little area.  I understand what Kaine meant by "downtown" Parkville...especially because I think at one point they had banners on the poles along that stretch of Harford Rd to make it seem Main-Street-USA but I agree that it's not a bad location around that section.

I'm in Perry Hall but grew up in Parkville and like PP said, I have seen the area change over the years...some good and some bad.  I love that it's so convenient to everything...you're 20ish minutes in pretty much any direction- Towson, Bel Air, Hunt Valley, Downtown, Hart/Miller Island -and that makes it very attractive.  Some of the houses have maintained value while other have lost value but I think that's pretty much anywhere you go.  Some schools are better than others but unless you have kids, I'm not sure I'd worry about that just yet.

And yes Jenn...there are hookers on Harford Road that usually linger down around Freddies to around Christopher Ave and in to Hamilton but you probably don't notice them because a) you're not looking for that kind of business and b) they don't dress as stereotypical hookers (boots, glitter, fancy hair).

re: the prostituion issues on Harford rd... its getting way better. WAY.  cops are on patrole and citizens of that neighborhood area (me) have made that cut waaaay back.

You'd be surprised where you can find a prostitute... usually on major roads near major highways..so Parkville Harford Rd strip is the perfect spot for business.

We love our neighborhood...we are back near Moyer and the school for the blind. Close to everything, tons of families and lots of really great neighbors/neighborhoods close by.

not to say that I go looking for that kind of business! Surprise

I love the area you live in.  I have 2 friends from high school that live back there...one on Chesley and I forget the name of the street the other one lives on but some of those houses are so huge!
