What did you do with your wedding bands?

Hey Ladies,

So, I've been divorced for 15 months and have been debating on whether or not to keep my rings.  I have two boys, 1 and 3, and their father is around on average every 8-10 weeks.  I don't forsee my XH ever being more involved in the boys' lives and I'm ready to move on.  He cheated and I discovered it.  Every time I see my wedding bands I get a horrible feeling in my stomach.  I'm thinking that I'd like to trade them in for money and make something new but am afraid I might regret not having them.  However, if I keep them, then they'll do nothing but remind me of my failed marriage.  mmm- what to do, what to do??

I don't understand this part. Are you saying if he was more involved in your boys' life you would keep the rings?

In any case, I wouldn't expect too much cash if you decide to sell them. But since you're not sure about it, place them out of your sight and you'll get to it when the time feels right. No pressure to do anything now.

  • I have no idea what he did with his but I sold mine and reset my e ring diamond into a pendant.

  • I'm selling mine and will use the money for a down payment on a condo or house one day.

Dang - you must have had an expensive ring if it'll be a down payment!

I have both of our rings and they are in the safe in my basement.  Not sure why, but I'm still a little attached to mine.  I loved everything about it and am not ready to part with it yet.  Eventually I'll probably use the diamonds to create another piece of jewelry.

    I was thinking the same.

I actually gave my rings (they are soldered together) to my best friend. She lost a diamond from her E ring and so I told her to take one from mine to replace it if it will fit. I figure, I'm not ever going to wear it..someone should get some use from it.

  • Sent mine to Kay Jeweler's gold program and got money in return.

No idea what he did with his, don't care.

I had a 3.3 kt monster of a center stone just on my e-ring.  My wedding band had 19 stones in it.  It was part of the "woo her with shiny things then manipulate her" scheme.  Next time I want a cracker jack ring.

  • I have been divorced for over 4 years now, but I still have them. I tried to sell them and I wouldn't get much for them. They are probably lost somewhere, who knows.

He probably lost his when he lost everything else in Hurricane Ike.

I got a cracker jack e-ring (the center stone was a fake diamond which cost $13, in fact STBX's wedding band cost more than both my e-ring and wedding band combined) - I'd rather be able to sell it and offset my current financial losses.

Instead, I plan to keep the setting (which is a white gold three stone setting) and replace my fake stones with a ruby and two side diamonds to wear on another finger.

  • I am saving mine and will let younger son use it as a trade in to upgrade and pick his own when he decides he wants to get engaged. Hopefully a long time from now.

This was my upgrade ring around 12 years of marriage. I still have my first ring. I am saving it because it is sentimental to me.

  • I plan to trade mine in at Kay Jewelry with their diamond exchange the day the papers are signed. I have no desire to keep them, and quite frankly, after he took all of my jewelry, I want new. I have between now and then to get the money for the other half of the jewelry, but they will trade them in for more than we paid for them, and I have to spend the same amount buying diamond jewelry.

  • I sold mine super cheap at a cash for gold place. I didn't want to mess with doing consignment, they weren't that fancy. They wouldn't buy his so I told them to just throw it away. Not like I was going to use it for anything.
  • I sold my rings to my friends mom who wanted them to make a really cool ring and earrings.

  • Having it reset so that I can wear it as a right hand ring.  The center stone is a really beautiful pear cut sapphire, and I like the idea of taking the symbol of a failed marriage and transforming it into a symbol of independence and new beginnings.
