i used yarn to hang my son's artwork in his playroom. similar to that picture with the tiny clothespins. it looks cute!
pottery barn also has something similar (where i got the idea) if you want to buy it instead. i just thought i could do the same thing w. yarn, which was much cheaper.
What about Divine Twine? Im not sure if it will be thick enough... but it it comes it tons of cool colors and has a really neat look... They sell smaller amounts of it on etsy.

Ooh, this looks nice! If I can find a small amount this might work. If not, I do like the ribbon suggestion. Thanks all!

It's not thick at all. Maybe the same as if you twirled 4 strands of "friendship bracelet thread" together.
I'm not quite sure what you can use but I think it would depend on the weight of the prints. If they are bigger they might pull down on the ribbon and not give you that soft swag you're looking for. If you do go for clothes line look for the all cotton one and maybe wash it in the washer to soften it up and get the kinks out of it. I bought clothes line to hang baby onesies on for a baby shower and it was kinked at every spot that it was wound in the package.
Also to cover the eye hooks you could use those flat painted wood decorations they sell at Michaels and AC Moore. I can't find a pic online but I used turtles to cover the clothes pins that are holding Tommy's crib quilt on the wall. Or you could use wooden letters and use the baby's initials. I know you're going to be surprised in the delivery room so this would have to be done after BabyD gets here but it should be an easy enough thing to finish.
Jen, when you go to Ikea, check the curtain section for what I posted. They're curtain "rods" (so you don't have to wander the whole store looking for them).
My friend used a curtain wire and clips to hang her son's artwork, it's so cute, and can be changed whenever. She got hers at IKEA, but I can't find the link online.

gl!
what if you braided the yarn? it would be triple thickness so give it a little more umph on the walls.
i haven't even been crafty enough to think of these sorts of ideas so take my opinion with a grain (or 14) of salt.

I did pick up something very similar but I wonder if it will kink. It was cheap enough that I can experiment.

You could also check a fabric store and look at the cords they have on spools. Those would be stronger than twine or ribbon. Something like this:

I've been meaning to get these from Ikea to hang things in Oliver's room (like prints and his "art" from school).
Wow, you ladies are great! I work near the Conshy Ikea so maybe I'll run over at lunch.
The prints aren't too big - I actually ordered 6 of these 6x10 prints from Etsy. http://www.etsy.com/listing/49394497/play-nice-6-in-x10-in-print
And Shan, thanks for the ideas to cover the eye hooks - I'll have to run to a craft store to check it out.

I have these in my son's room. He hangs his "legendary"
Pokemon cards from them. I do have to say that they look kind of cool hanging the way they do.
