Emailing on a smartphone...rant/vent

Ugh, I don't understand/comprehend what is so challenging for people as it relates to emailing on a smartphone (BB or iPhone specifically).  People I work with can't seem to utilize the enter key or punctuation!  Hello!  The English language has these things for a reason!!!  I mean, what would you do if you got an email like the following?

"yes please go ahead and send to her talked to so&so last night will proceed as before have more to add to it will send on monday with final"

I'm sorry, what?!  Need more explanation, please!  How it the world am I supposed to interpret what you are referring to, what my steps should be, or anything else for that matter?!  It's one big run-on with no separation of thought!

Please tell me none of you do this, and you are perfectly aware of how to compose a proper sentence on a smartphone.

Thanks for letting me vent...

  • I have a huge huge petpeeve about this.  You have a keyboard, you are not creating something on a number keypad, there's no reason that you can't type coherently.

I don't ever use 'r' instead of are/our, etc.  NEVER.  However, I'm in general a grammar/spelling nazi so I would never do that anyway...

All that to say, it drives me crazy too. :)

(Although, I do have a signature on my phone that says "Please excuse my brevity, I'm sending this from my phone."  so I might shorten my message, but I would never sending something that is not understandable.)

  • I think it is the whole tiny aspect. I hate typing on a phone.

Also, when I am actually sitting at my desk I can think out a better response. I am a teacher, so the nature of my work emails usually don't need to be answered on the spot. I also can't/do not check my phone while I am working.

I totally agree.  I refuse to use "text speak", even when texting.  Spell out the damn word, it is not hard.  Capitalization and punctuation-not hard.  On my phone, all I have to do is hit space twice and it adds a period and auto capitalizes the next letter.

  • I just don't think there is an excuse if your job requires travel and/or requires you to be out of the physical office a lot.

Yes, I understand, teaching is largely not a field where responding from a mobile device is necessary.

There are plenty of other industries that do require this (mine is one of them), and I just don't think there's an excuse.  If we are going to continue working as normal, then why use 'I'm on my phone" as an excuse?!  There are plenty of apps out there to help you do your job remotely.

Grrr...this is just me being frustrated.

THANK YOU!  It's not that hard people!  Just type like you would on a keyboard!
