Crib/Mattress

We found one we like. Our in-laws are buying our crib so we went with their price range, but something that looked like a good buy.

At Kid Stuff it is $399, at NFM its $299.

There would be no difference in condition right?

Anyone ever buy the Million Dollar Baby Crib Cameron? Thats the one I think we are settled on. Its a 4-in-1 and has a drawer on the bottom. That company is rated a B in the baby bargain book.

Also, where did you buy a mattress?  I'm gonna go through the baby bargain book for this too, just thought I'd ask!

Re: Crib/Mattress

  • We have a Million Dollar Baby crib (not that same model) and have loved it.  we got it at kid stuff.  We ordered a colgate mattress online- I love our crib mattress!
  • I think $399 for a crib is a little nuts, but I had to buy two.

I paid $175 for a Graco crib  AND mattress at Walmart. My kids are plenty comfortable and sleep great.

I kind of agree with this.

Are you really going to use it as a toddler bed and then a full-size bed? Do you need to buy extra rails to convert it?

We skip toddler beds here, so a convertible crib is pretty useless for us. We replaced DD's dropside crib with a convertible crib, but only because I got a Graco crib for $88 on clearance. We won't convert it to a bed.

I think Holly is a little pissed that she shelled out so much money on O's crib. Maybe she will chime in. Wink

  • If it was me buying it I would have no problem with buying cheaper. But my MIL only wanted to go to Kids Stuff or NFM. We are planning on going to NFM over the weekend. This was one of the cheapest ones other than the ones that were floor models for sale which were loose and chips etc. We are also gonna go back through their clearance models too as this part of their store was closed when we got there. We are not settled for sure on this one its just the only one we were interested in there so thought I"d ask.

  • The crib I bought was the exact same at kidstuff and nfm.   It was cheaper at the ks in omaha than nfm.   ks in Lincoln was more expensive on this crib tan ks in omaha.   I also used one of those coupons from ks that comes in the mail.

I found the firmest mattress at ks.

I don't think 300 is too much especially if you are going to use it for the 2nd child

  • We just got our crib-Million Dollar Baby crib-at NFM for $188. It is a 4-1 convertible, we will probably only use it as far as a toddler bed b/c we will re-use it again for the next baby since we already have a full size bed. The last child will probably get to use it as the full size bed as intended. So far, we haven't gotten to use it yet since our baby isn't here yet lol, but it was super easy to put together and seems really sturdy!

As for a mattress, I'm not help. I got a brand new/never used mattress from a friend for 30 bucks.

  • Ditto SCB.  We got Jude's crib at Target on clearance for $60 :)  a few months ago, it was regularly $300 and I wasn't willing to spend the $ on that at the time.

We don't convert our cribs though (since there is usually another kid moving into them) so maybe that would make it worthwhile.

  • My ILs bought Owen's crib for us. We got it at Target for $150 or so. We got the mattress there too. It's held up nicely for 2 kids except for the one screw I managed to strip, but that's my fault. I hadn't planned on doing a toddler bed too but once Owen was about 18 months he liked getting in and out of it on his own and I was happy we had that option. I really don't think price makes much difference in this category. Save a couple of hundred dollars and put that money towards a nice breast pump.

  • yes, I totally learned my lesson after buying Owen's crib/nursery set. We spent a little over 1K on his crib, dresser, and mattress. Dumb. I think the crib was like $499! WTF?!! But, it was our first child and I really wanted it. He is using it now as a full size bed (with footboard) but seriously do the math and the bed he is sleeping in cost about $900 total (had to buy the rails that were $150, bunky board, and mattress were about $300). Thank god for Pinterest so i can find something to maybe do with the beautiful side rails that are no longer worth a darn.

I got smart with the second baby and found a like new crib at at garage sale for $75 which included the mattress. I sold the mattress since I still had Owen's to use. I can convert this crib to a full size bed and won't need to buy any rails since it only needs a frame to attach to it. Much cheaper and I won't feel bad about throwing/repurposing the side and front pieces. I am just as happy with both cribs but obviously there was a HUGE price difference. The older you get the wiser you get :)

  • I have the mattress from kids stuff that is double sided. One side is very firm for babies and the other is softer for when she is a toddler. I really like ours and so far it's holding up great.
  • We paid around $450 for E's crib, but that included the toddler conversion and the full size rails.  She will sleep in this bed until she moves out.  Going into it with that mindset, I didn't think that $450 was that much.  We got a cheapo dresser from the Mart that matched well.  We thought about doing the whole set, but decided it wasn't worth it.

For the second one, we bought a convertible again, but I bought it used for $75.  Definitely more economical, but we'll use this one until Isla is out of the house too.
