ettm: skype

i don't really want to look up skype at work since it's a "social" site... but can somebody tell me more about it?

is US to US calling free? international?

do both people need webcams?

if we happen to have a camera set on something 24 hours.....say...a baby, or a sick dog.......can we skype it on our phone? another computer?

can we just leave it on to stream...and anybody that we want can tap in? or is it 1-1 only?

any other info that i might want to know?

Re: ettm: skype

  • I've never used it computer to computer or with web cams.

When I went to Africa my mom and I both downloaded the app and I would call her from it using the free wifi at the hotels. All we had to do was both set up accounts. This did not cost either of us anything.

I just went to the homepage and its pretty safe for work - not "social" at all. It's like logging onto AT&T and seeing their products and services.

  • Ours was just voice to voice using iPhones. She has an old iPhone 3 so it doesn't have the option to do face to face.

okay i guess i'll need to do more research on it later. our baby monitor has "skype capabilities" and h thinks he wants to open it earlier so we can use it for herc and skype mobile through our phones while we're at work.

  • I think it would be super awesome to use skype to watch Herc if you could! There are so many options on Skype - you just have to find what you're looking for.

  • Last time i used it was more than a year ago, but at that time...

is US to US calling free? international?
computer-to-computer calls were free (regardless of locations)
    computer-to-phone i think had charges
assigning a phone number so people can call your computer was ~$3/mo

    do both people need webcams?
    neither

if we happen to have a camera set on something 24 hours.....say...a baby, or a sick dog.......can we skype it on our phone? another computer?
I would think you could on the computer (don't see why not), but maybe not a phone(?)

can we just leave it on to stream...and anybody that we want can tap in? or is it 1-1 only?
i think this would depend on the monitor, not on skype

any other info that i might want to know?
You can buy security cameras that record to your hard drive and/or can be accessed remotely.  We used to have one and i think it was ~$100 for two (including the software).

good thing i never checked....h started to do the research and said "skype is blocked at work".....so we will have to resort to the phone, if it's possible. opening up the baby monitor today to see......
