Birth control for acne?

I've been on bd for so long, and have been on and off the past few years to save money. However, it has caused my skin to form the worst acne ever!!! I know I need ot go to a derm. as well, but trying to start from the inside out. My ob/gyn gave me Loestrin 24 fe. Ive had no side affects in the past 3 months, however, no improvements really either. I looked into filling the prescription and its super expensive!

I was on Yaz before, same thing, no weird side affects, and my skind was pretty normal, still had an occasional breakout, but I've always had that. Once I went off my skin exploded!! I might go back to this, since they have it in generic, I can get it for $20/3 months.

What birth control are you on that has saved your skin? How much do you pay?

TIA!

Re: Birth control for acne?

  • Orthotricyclen Lo & $18/mo.
  • Orthotrycyclen -----it was like $6/month since it was covered under insurance.

    It worked fantastically.

  • I cannot wait to start birth control next year, precisely for this reason. I have considered just starting right now but that would just be silly and wasteful, lol.

I've got nothing helpful, good luck tho!

  • It was a few years ago that I went on bc for acne. My doctor put me on trinessa and it did wonders. My face cleared up pretty quickly. I went to the derm. and it did nothing really for my skin but this definitely helped.

lepossionrouge:  It's not necessarily silly and wasteful to start bc early even if it's just for acne. That's kinda what I thought. I was a virgin until my wedding night but I had been on bc for a couple years. For one I wanted to get my skin cleared up before my wedding but also because I learned I had a bit of a hormonal inbalance which was causing the acne. So I think it was worth going on two years before I actually needed it for its intended purpose. But maybe that's just me

  • I used to use Ortho tri-cyclen Lo, and I've liked that pill the best over others I've had in the past. Also, if you're strapped for cash, check out the manufacturers website (of whatever pill you use) and see if there are any coupons you can print out and give to your pharmacist.

  • I was on Loestrin (sp?) and it made my face explode with pimples, it was horrible! I went on Yaz and it really helped my face clear up. I've been on that for a couple years now though and I'm starting to notice more breakouts the 3rd week of the pills every single month.
  • All birth control CAN help with acne ONLY IF your acne is HORMONE RELATED. Ortho tri-cyclen just happens to be the only one that went through the expensive clinical trials to be approved by the FDA so doctors can specifically prescribe it for that purpose and it wouldn't be considered "off label" use.

Like with ANY med, which BC that will work in clearing up your acne is different for every person.  Again...it only works if your acne flare ups are hormonally related. It doesn't arbitrarily get rid of zits.
