Dry skin remedies for kids

I have a 3 yr. old boy, and he's really dry skin. He itches so much that he starts getting red all over. (He doesn't have any rashes or boo boo's before the itching) I've tried Hydrocortizone, regular baby lotion, Aveeno eczema lotion and just about everything else. Nothing works! I asked his pediatrician and he suggested all I could do is the Hydro cortizone.  All that does is clear up the redness or swelling after he itches. But it doesn't stop the itching. Help would be great. TIA.

Re: Dry skin remedies for kids

  • Is your pediatrician sure that allergies aren't involved?
"Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. It's just that yours is stupid."
  • This doesn't get rid of the eczema, but preventative measures include::

    Cooler baths

Infrequent bathing (skip a day or skip two days between baths)

Using Dove soap / body wash

I think aveeno also has the oatmeal bath - - I have used that as well (but stopped in favor of the Dove which was cheaper and more available)

I had a friend who used L'occitaine shea butter lotion for her kids and swore by it, but I have never used it myself - I also don't know if any shea butter product will do or it has to be L'occitaine.

  • I don't have any kids, but I've worked at a daycare for 4 years. Vaseline (petroleum jelly) and Eucerin Original Moisturizing lotion are "popular." They're kind of greasy but they really are effective and gentle for sensitive skin. Good luck!
Daisypath Anniversary tickers PitaPata Dog tickers LilySlim Weight loss tickers
  • We've tried everything. Dd's is so bad she bleeds. We finally tried some ridiculouslyexpensive rx and it worked. Nothing else did.
  • i would to an allergist
  • a dermatologist would probably be a good idea.
Friday, December 28 2012. The day I had emergency appendix surgery in Mexico and quit smoking. Proof that everything has a good side!! DH and I are happily child-free!! No due date or toddler tickers here!! my read shelf:

  • What about running a humidifier in his room at night?  As soon as I turn the heat on on the fall, I start using a humidifier to keep my skin from flaking, but I don't know anything about kids.
  • Skin of a child is very soft and sensitive therefore cosmetic products don?t suit them. You can try some homemade remedies for better results. Apply mixture of rosewater and glycerin on your child body to get rid of dry skin problem.
