birthday gift for 4yo acquaintance?

So... Katen got invited to a birthday party for two kids in her class. Not really a friend of hers so I don't know much about them. We have to bring two gifts (boy/girl twins) but I'm totally drawing a blank for gifts.on exactly what to buy them.

Books are always safe but I don't know what they have. How much would a person usually spend on a classmate/non buddy?  I'm sure this is easy and I'm just not thinking hard enough.

Re: birthday gift for 4yo acquaintance?

  • I'm pretty cheap by nature so if we didn't know them well I'd probably only spend $10 a present.  Transformers and dinosaur figures seem to be really big right now with the preschool/kindergarten boys that we know so you could go that route.  For girls I'm a big fan of coloring or craft activities.  I also always include a gift receipt just in case.

  • ooo, I think I might have a good idea?  You know that toy store in valley west mall on the lower level, near the play area?  It is usually ridiculously expensive (like, we saw a tiny truck that didn't do anything that was $52!!)  Well, I think they have their melissa and doug stuff mismarked, or at least their sticker collections.  We were in there last week and noticed that their fun sticker kits are only $4.99!  I ordered one of the same sets off amazon for $10, and they are usually $15-20 in stores.  They have fun "create a person" sets, etc.  G loves it. I bought a couple for random gifts too. I figured if it is someone we hardly know at all, the sticker set will be good. Otherwise, it is an easy thing to supplement.

  • For Cohen's classmate's parties I've been to, how much is spent on gifts ranges from (totally based on guess) under $10 to over $25. No one seems to care about the monetary value because the kids are so excited about every single one of them.

I mentioned this in a different post last week, but World Market has really unique, cool toys for that age that are reasonably priced ($3 and up).

Happy mom to two sweet, silly boys: Cohen age 4, AJ age 2.
