How do I keep my needle from gumming up?

I have sewn a lot of appliques on by hand in the past and just recently started doing some with the sewing machine.  I ran into a problem with the needle getting sticky from the Heat n Bond.  I had to take it off and clean it because I could no longer thread it.

Have you experienced this?

  • You are most likely using the wrong kind.  You need to use the one made to be sewn (they have ones that are meant to be ironed on and sewn and others that are not meant to be sewn through).  I have used it a katrillion (yes, that is a number) times and never had a gumming problem.  I do have to be careful the two types seperated in my stash.

This. My needles never get gummed up when using the Heat & Bond Lite, which is meant to be sewn in. The other stuff is meant only for ironing on.

  • In a pinch I've sewn through the type that aren't meant for sewing since I didn't want to make a store run, and I just use an alcohol wipe from time to time to clean the needle.
