Hand Made Gift Open Poll

With moving into the new house a month before Christmas, there won't be a huge budget for gifts this year. I want to make homemade gifts for everyone this year, but want to make sure it isn't something people will have to pretend to appreciate. I wanted to get some opinions from you ladies:

What homemade gifts do you normally give around the holidays?

What is your favorite homemade gift you have recieved during the holidays?

Anything you hated?

Anything else that you loved?

I want to be sure that I get started making whatever it is I decide early, so I really appreciate your feedback!

Re: Hand Made Gift Open Poll

  • I'm planning on doing the same thing this year. A few years ago, I crocheted different scarves or/blankets for people. That went over pretty well.

This year I'm probably going to make things. I've already made some jam that I'm planning on giving people for Christmas. I will probably make things like that, jam, sauce, I even found a way to make homemade vanilla extract (it's really easy)

  • I made some knitted things last year for Christmas, however yarn can get expensive unless you are doing smaller items like scarves. I think that would be a nice idea, either knitted or crocheted.

I got a cookie mix in a mason jar last year from my bro and SIL. It was cute, and gave me an excuse to make cookies.

    I love Amanda's jam idea :-)

  • I also like the jam idea.  Anything edible/drinkable - jam, salsa, wine, hot chocolate, candy etc. - is a nice home made gift idea, especially in a cute packaging for the occasion.

Another thing would be soy candles in cute containers.  A friend of mine was doing them where she'd put them in wine, martini, margarita etc. glasses and they were refillable for cheap.  Those were also nice gifts.

  • This is such a great post, as I am the handmade gift QUEEN!

What homemade gifts do you normally give around the holidays?

I always try and give one treat/food in addition to something else if I have the time. Last year I made everyone homemade cinnamon honey butter and it was a HUGE success! This year I am thinking about making homemade apple butter because I have a ton of apples in the freezer from our visit to the orchard a couple of months back.

What is your favorite homemade gift you have recieved during the holidays?Someone once made me homemade lip gloss...LOVED! Oh and the sherbert-colored scarf my Mom made me one year is still among my favorites! My best friend is really handy with ceramics so she made me a very special Christmas ornament one year. Really...my friends and family know me well and have been pretty successful in what they've gifted. Anything you hated? Not yet. *crossing fingers*  Anything else that you loved?I love what I am doing for other this year. I have a blanket I'm finishing up for my niece, I made a beanie over Labor Day weekend for my older niece, I am making homemade candles (upcycled from candle remnants) for most of the women in my family, homemade CD's from some free kids music I got off Amazon for my niece, some sugar-free candy for the men whom I do not know how to gift for, t-shirt  bracelets for my co-workers and sister, a painting for another friend, some homemade hot chocolate and vanilla chai tea mix...the list is endless. Like I said...I'm a homemade connoisseur -  rarely does someone *not* get a homemade gift from me. :)

  • We were thinking about making Limoncello for our friends and family -- DH says it looks super easy and then you just put it in cute little bottles. We'll see if it actually happens and obviously this is not a good gift if your recipients are not drinkers!
  • I am not crafty at all, so I have never done the home made gift thing, though the few things that I have gotten I have loved and though were very personal and thought out.

I have a scarf a friend made me that I really like a lot.  It is in a color that is bright, and not like the scarves that I have bought.  So it is really fun to wear when I an wearing something kind of plain, to add some color, which I think is really fun.  I would love a knitted scarf, hat, gloves, or blanket.  A knitted hat would be fun!

As a kid I got some really nice home made toys from an aunt, a few nice wood carved  toys, which I loved and had for years, and a sock monkey, so cute.

I really like the jam idea and many of the other food ideas.  However I have to say, that I really do eat so badly over the holidays, that I am not a huge fan if someone gives me cookies or something  sugary that just adds to my unhealthy eating.  That is just me though.

  • LOVE homemade gifts!  To me it says, "I really thought about it and put in a lot of love".

In the past I've "sort of" made kitchen towels and potholders (if you know they need them).

For the towels, I use a store bought towel and then sew some fabric (or knit) onto it so it's easier to hang for a stove or fridge.  Something like this:  http://sewing.craftgossip.com/tutorial-hanging-dishtowel-for-your-kitchen/2010/01/06/

I also think the homemade jam is a good idea!

For that reason I usually put "no candy, please" on my secret santa exchange form at work.  If I do happen to get candy or cookies from anybody I usually bring them in to work to share with everyone, or take them to my cousin's house on Christmas Eve to share with the family.

  • Pesto might be another neat idea which isn't junk food :-) If they have tree nut allergies you can use pumpkin seeds instead!
