CD recommendations
Ladies who CD - I really want to CD and am hoping to convince my daycare provider to play along too. I am liking the Bumgenius 4.0, but want to hear recommendations about snap versus aplix. I know snaps tend to last longer, but expect to be better able to convince day care to do aplix. Do you think I could get aplix to last for 2 kids? What size did they really start fitting for you?
Also, did you start with newborn dipes? What did you do? I'm expecting our baby to be upper 7-8+lbs range based on family history. I know a lot of ladies on the CD board use prefolds - can you just trifold and lay in a cover for newborns? I don't think DH or I are going to want to get into the whole snappi routine etc. since it won't transfer over to daycare.

I was holding out (lazy) hope I guess...
We didn't start CD with Alex until she was 5 months, so we missed the newborn poop stage. We have mostly applix, and they are definitely showing a lot of wear, but they seem really easy to put new on, if you can sew. I like the fit better with applix, but because of us now having two (soon anyway), the new order I made are all snaps.
I believe they say 10 pounds is when LO finally starts fitting into OS diapers. Since Alex was 8.8 and the second is usually bigger than the first, we didn't bother with NB sizes.
When we use prefolds, we do the angel wing fold. It makes a sort of pocket to hold the mess inside. I'm not sure how newborn poop will work with that, but we've only had a few leaks onto the covers.
Our stash is nearly 100% BG 4.0's- all snaps. We have one fuzzibunz (well, we did... I gave it to Heather), one Rumparooz (it's alright) and about 4 blueberry's (I only like the NON-minky ones). We MUCH prefer the BG's.
N wore disposables until he was about 3 months and then we started on cloth on the smallest setting. They technically would have fit him before (he was almost 9 lbs at birth) but they just seemed so bulky that we waited awhile until we got our stash built up.
Reasons we chose snaps: they last longer, less chance of needing replaced, and most kids probably can't un-do them.

IMO it's no harder than putting a regular diaper on him! lol. Once he decides he doesn't want to lay there, it's a fight anyway... snaps or velcro. The snaps don't take much longer at all once you get the hang of it. If you get the one size diapers then you already have the rise adjusted so it's just 4 snaps- 2 on each side- and it's pretty quick/easy.
It sounds like you are looking at an in-home provider? I'd imagine she would be open to the idea, especially if you show her one and get the "old fashioned" kind out of her mind. It's when you get into centers and all of their "rules" that people run into more problems.

We used all fitteds and prefolds from 0-2 months--the angel fold with a snappi is great for newborn poos. At 2 months we started using pockets in addition to our pre-folds and fitteds. We have a mix of aplix and snaps. All of our pockets are BGs or Blueberries. We like both. I like the blueberries better mainly because they wash up better. At daycare she uses aplix only.
There is a woman online who will convert aplix dipes to snap dipes for $3 a diaper. So, that's always something to consider too.

We've been using BGs with alpix for over 2.5 years and they're holding up just fine. The alpix looks well used but it sticks just fine. I did buy about 10 replacement kits from BG so I am going to replace the alpix on some of the BGs for this baby, but I probably don't need to.
We CDed during the nb stage. Laying a prefold in a cover could work, but you'll need a lot of covers. We used the jelly roll fold for the nb stage and stil use it today. And learning to use a snappi is not hard at all. Even my DH learned how to fold a prefold and use a snappi right away and had no problems. I promise, it's not scary at all.

We did pre-folds (GMD) with covers (Thirsties Duo) during the newborn stage (2-10 weeks or so--we used disposables for the first two weeks).
Now we have mostly BG4.0s (definitely my favorite), with like four Fuzzibunz and four Blueberry mixed in. We have all snaps, no aplix. We chose snaps for all of the reasons Tiff mentioned. Our daycare provider (an in-home) is totally fine with them. Also, when we first showed her the CDs, she was amazed, since she had never seen the modern ones before. They are seriously no more difficult than a disposable, so I can't imagine why your provider would refuse to use them.
Also, the snaps are not hard at all. And by the time you have a squirmy toddler, you've changed the snaps hundreds of times--you'll be a pro. Just today, I got together with a bunch of friends from college and they couldn't believe how quickly I changed Nora's diaper. LOL

We have BG, FB, and a few others but I love FB for the newborn stage so much trimmer and more adjustable! BGs are a bit bulker but hold alot more wettness. We have velcro and snaps. Wish I would have bought only snaps! But for babysitters that have never used cloth, it's a nice intro into CDs. June's figured out the velcro months ago...so clothes are not an option when we use the velcro
Plus when laundering, the velcro does not stay on the launder tab EVER! So you always have to unvelcro them from inserts or other diaps. I'm really glad that I bought a variety of brands. We started using CDs almost from the start and I think we should have from the get go!!! Next time I may even take them to the hospital!!! Don't be afraid to use bleach on the inserts after they start funking up either! (may be months!!)
