Lying Game (spoilers)

I'm sorry if there was already a post on this.  I just watched my DVR, looked back and didn't see a post.  What do you guys think?  Wow!  Is Sutton dead?  Was Annie the one in the car with her?  Thoughts?  I can't believe I have to wait until January.  I really like this show.

Re: Lying Game (spoilers)

  • I thought it was a great episode! I really like this show!

I don't think it was Annie in the car.  I was thinking that it was Alex (that's the one creepy dad's name, right) or someone he hired or blackmailed like he has been doing to the one kid.  Although, I guess it could be Annie.  I think she is unstable and she was upset with Sutton after that visit but I don't see her intentionally hurting her.

Also, watching that episode, I could not believe how awful Sutton was to Emma.  And it is crazy to me that they are the same actress!  I think she's done a really incredible job.

I'm not sure if Sutton is dead and I don't think what I'm going to say below is a spoiler because 1) the show and the books are often so different and 2) this isn't a book spoiler because it happens literally in the first paragraph or so of the book and it is even in the description of the book on the back of the cover,  but just in case, read the below comment at your own risk

*but in the book, Sutton isn't alive.  She narrates parts of the story "watching" Emma but she doesn't remember anything about her life or how she died.  And Emma doesn't know Sutton is there.  Although I guess that even in the book we don't know for sure that Sutton is dead (I don't think, it has been a while since I read it). She could be in coma and following Emma with some twin connection or something.  So the whole premise of the story is pretty different but it isn't entirely weird to me if Sutton were to have died.

Wowser!  Did you really think I could stand to not scroll down.  :)  So in the book they don't trade places?  It's just Emma being Sutton and Sutton dies right away?  I actually hope she doesn't die but maybe that's why they made her so horrible to Emma right before.

Sorry!   I hope I didn't ruin anything for you.  This really does happen very, very early in book 1.

But yes, the story opens and Sutton is a ghost.  And Emma is in the foster home.  And I think Sutton sees Emma but Emma doesn't know she's there.  So Sutton sort of follows along the story experiencing everything with Emma.  In the book, it starts with the creepy brother finding a youtube video where it looks like Emma (but it is really Sutton) is being strangled.  Then it is similar to the tv show where creepy bro accuses Emma of stealing and Emma runs away and goes to find the girl in the video.  And I think once she gets there she is mistaken for Sutton and then at some point starts to figure out something must have happened to Sutton. But people already think she is Sutton, so she just keeps playing along.

And one thing the book talks a lot about that is only ever really briefly mentioned in the show is the "games" Sutton and her friends used to play.  On the show, I think Ethan's brother mentions them once and so does that tennis player girl that they all don't like.  But in the book they play "Lying Games"  which are mean tricks they play on others and record (like the youtube video).  So Emma is trying to figure out what happened to Sutton and if their games had something to do with her disappearing and how she has this twin she didn't know about.

But who knows what will happen in the show!  I think the mom mystery is so good that I'm not sure the other stuff is needed!

  • I absolutely love this show so I'm glad there's this post!  I didn't know anything about the book series--do they talk about the mother in it?  Is Sutton still an adopted child to wealthy parents?

That makes sense about the Lying Games being a bigger deal in the books.  I was sorta confused why that's the show title but it's only mentioned briefly in the episodes.  Maybe they will play a bigger role next season?

I hope Sutton doesn't die because I'm interested to see how the parents embrace both girls (if they get the chance).

The younger sister's boyfriend intrigues me.  He has some sort of story behind him.  The dad is visibly upset every time he notices the bracelet so I'm interested to see what happens with that.

I've only read the first book (the second one came out right around the time that the show started) and I think there are supposed to be 4 books total.  So keep in mind that I've only read 25% of the story.  But, yes Sutton's family life is similar: adopted by wealthy parents.  Emma's is similar as well, foster care for years although I think in the book she remembers being with her mom when she was young.

It has been a while since I read the book but I don't remember their mom being talked about that much at all.  It seems like the main focus in the first book was more on what happened to Sutton then the twins and how they got separated.
