So....about this baby making....

This is probably just going to be a vent/whiney post from me, but here it is if you care to read.

DH and I decided that we want to start trying to have a kid.  Good, Great.  So, I go off the pill.  Haven't have a period (been a month)  I have been on the pill forever, and have taken them continuously for the past (almost two years with no period at all), so I get it that my body probably has no clue what is going on.

Well, here is my main issue.  DH has been bugging me to get AFLAC insurance, especially before we have kids.  Well, I thought this was a supplemental insurance that you could get anytime.  Well...not the case.  Can't sign up until open enrollment time at work.  Perfect.  That time is now.  So I sign up and it doesn't go into effect until January.  So one has to figure that there will be a waiting period of some sort before they would cover maternity benefits.  And there is.  10 months.  Really?!!?  So, that means we have to wait until February to start trying.  Ugh...I have already waited longer than I wanted as it is!

So, now I don't know what to do.  DH wants me to go back on the pill, which I am not really interested in doing.  I have this (maybe irrational fear) that I feel like I am already too old to be getting knocked up for the first time and that since I have been on the pill forever, it will take a long time to get pregnant (I know, I know....you can get pregnant right away off the pill, but I have this fear that I am going to be that girl that it takes years to get pregnant)

So, my next idea was the natural family planning...but that requires a period so I have an idea of when I am ovulating.  Ugh.  So frustrating.  DH is anti-condom, which to be honest...I don't like them either, so I can't blame him.

Anyway....lots to think about.  Stupid Aflac and their 10 month waiting period.  Hmmm...maybe if I had signed up a year ago when DH told me to.  I am a dummy.

  • Well, I think you are making to much out of this. Feb. is only 3 months away. You haven't even had a normal cycle yet so that should be your first priority. Go to the doc for an annual, blood tests, etc. And get a cycle. Get signed up for Aflac. Suck it up and use some condoms or do natural family planning to get by for 3 months. Also, take a pg test just to make sure you aren't pg.

Honestly, this will sound cold (but you know my story) but freaking RELAX. And I know everyone hates that term but you are fretting over things that seem so minor right now. Get your cycles figured out and go from there. Adding this stupid stress will not help the situation. And start taking some prenatals. Good Luck.

    This.

The last thing I would do is go back on the pill. Three months isn't that long, so I would suck it up and go the condom route. That gives you 3 months to hopefully get a regular cycle back, start taking prenatals, etc.

Yep.  Go get some Aflac!  I would've killed to have it, and I certainly would've held off getting pregnant if I knew I could've had it.  For what it's worth, it took three cycles for me to get pregnant.

  • I understand the obsessiveness & need to plan, but this is something that follows its own timetable. Take the advice above - start your prenatals, go for a preconception visit, use condoms, and get your Aflac in order. Hopefully by the time Feb. rolls around you'll have a good handle on what your cycle is doing & it will be easy for you to get pregnant. As everyone said, it may take some time anyway.

    Good luck!
