Would you be concerned? (re: headaches)

I've been getting horrible headaches for the past 5-6 months. I'm pretty sure they're migraines. I've noticed that when I get them, I seem to have memory loss, or forgetfulness might be a better term for it. Like last night, I kept forgetting what I was going to say. Seriously, it happened like multiple times every hour. One time, I even knew the topic it was about and it still took me at least 5 minutes to finally remember. That doesn't usually happen that much, so it was strange (and extremely annoying.) Would you be concerned? Go to the doctor? Does this type of thing happen to anyone else? I've been getting these migraine type headaches about once a week. I tend to overthink things and think things are worse than they really are when it comes to health issues. I just wanted people's opinions to see if I'm concerned over nothing. Of course, I always think of the worse case scenario so I'm thinking, "oh crap, migraines and forgetfulness, what if I have a brain tumor? What if I just don't go to the doctor and by the time I do, it's too late?" Haha, yep, told you I overthink things ;)

Re: Would you be concerned? (re: headaches)

  • I wouldn't go to brain tumor, but it could be a different type of headache, or possibly something more serious. You absolutely should see a doctor, especially if the problem is worsening or becoming more frequent.

Most sites I found while searching for this said that headaches plus memory issues are a flag and you should see a doctor.

Get that appointment and feel better soon!

  • I would go to the doctor. Having migraines consistently isn't normal and at the very least they can give you something to help with them. My sister has migraines and she has meds she can take at the onset of one and, while they don't get rid of it completely, they help enough to where she can at least get some sleep.

  • As someone who gets migraines 1-2 times a week for roughly 5 years, I say go to the Dr. I have migraines due to a car wreck that messed up my spine. Then my lovely hormones make them worse. Although, I do have them that frequently, I know the symptoms and can take a simple ibprofen to make sure it doesn't go into a full blown migraine.

With that being said, I have never had memory loss or forgetfulness. Typical migraines make you sensitive to smells, noise, and light. Feels like a jackhammer in your temple/eye areas.

I am sure it is nothing, but I would get it checked out. Even if it is just typical migraines, you can at least get better medication that will work for you.

  • Go see a doctor.  Memory loss isn't common with migraines.

Before you go to the doctor, if I were you, I would keep a migraine diary (my doctor had me do this). Just document what you do each day - 2 hours of studying, worked for 8 hours, didn't get a lot of sleep because the dog hogged the bed, argued with DH about dishes - document EVERYTHING - this will help you to pinpoint what is causing the headaches and help you to prevent them in the future and it will also make it easier on your doctor to prescribe the meds you need.

    Good luck!

    I agree with this.

I have a migraine about once-twice a month, and severe headaches more often than that. I finally went to the doctor about six months ago, mostly due to my own brain tumor paranoia. I really wished I'd kept a migraine diary before going in. It can be pretty difficult to answer questions about whether the headache is usually on the right or left side, front or back; if there's a common theme food-wise when you get them; if you've been more stressed when you get them; etc. I ended up having a CT scan, just to make sure, and it came back normal. My doctor prescribed me meds to take at the onset of a migraine, and it's really helped.

I'd keep a diary for two weeks or so, and then go have it checked out. GL!

  • Thanks everyone for the advice! I think I will keep a diary for a couple weeks and then go to the doctor, that's a good idea. Of course, now I have to find a new PCP since my insurance provider just changed and my PCP isn't covered with my new insurance. So any PCP recs for the Moore/Norman/S OKC area would be awesome!

I'm glad you're getting them checked out! I see Dr. Stephen Lindsey in Norman and am really happy with him. Spends a lot of time with you, but you can end up waiting awhile due to the fact that he does this for every patient.

She was the PCP I just switched to last year! I really, really like her, but now she's not covered on my new insurance. I'm super bummed.

Thanks lizzyb for the rec. I've heard some great things about him. I'll have to check and see if he's covered on my insurance.

I also see Dr. Sieck. Great doctor! He actually found out that I had gall stones after I had been to the ER twice and was misdiagnosed. I really hope you can get some answers. I got really bad migraines but I believe they were caused by my Mirena. They went away after it was taken out. But having memory loss caused by it is really scary!
