i originally posted this on my BMB...but i'm thinking there might be regional differences too....so...tell me more about godparents

1) what do you define as a godparent? (let's keep it short)

2) do you have godparents?

3) are you a godparent to anyone's kids?

4) if you're KTFU, TTGKTFU, TATTGKTFUSITF (thinking about TTGKTFU sometime in the future) already have kids, etc... do you plan on (or do you already have) godparents for your kids?

Re: poll: god parents

  • what do you define as a godparent? (let's keep it short)
someone to give your kids extra love.

    do you have godparents?
    not officially.

are you a godparent to anyones kids?
    no.

do you plan on having / do you already have godparents for your kids?
i think so. it's not "traditional" in my family, but it is in h's family.....but in his family, all godparents are family members, and they all live near each other. we live in another state from the rest of his fam..so i don't know if i want to stick with family.

  • 1) what do you define as a godparent? (let's keep it short) For me, it's a religious thing (since I'm Catholic).  So the godparent is one whose job it is to help be an example to the child of what it means to be a good Christian.

    2) do you have godparents?  No...I was raised Protestant, and at least where I was born and raised, choosing godparents isn't the norm for Protestants.

    3) are you a godparent to anyone's kids?  I'm not, but DH is godfather to both of his nephews.

    4) if you're KTFU, TTGKTFU, TATTGKTFUSITF (thinking about TTGKTFU sometime in the future) already have kids, etc... do you plan on (or do you already have) godparents for your kids?  Yes, we will.  Not sure who, though, since they have to be Catholic, so that limits us to DH's side of the family and my friends.  We'll probably end up going with BIL and either SIL or one of my good college friends.

  • 1) what do you define as a godparent? (let's keep it short) anything from 'giving the kid extra love' to 'being a religious example' - also, I think it's a way to include someone who wouldn't 'normally' be in the inner circle (like aunts and uncles already are)

    2) do you have godparents? yes, and I was raised protestant, however, I don't really have that much of a relationship with them (not in a bad way, just not close to them - my parents are still friends with them though)

    3) are you a godparent to anyone's kids? not yet!

    4) if you're KTFU, TTGKTFU, TATTGKTFUSITF (thinking about TTGKTFU sometime in the future) already have kids, etc... do you plan on (or do you already have) godparents for your kids? Yes I would, kind of just 'for fun' though

ETA: I totally like my sister's godparents better than mine, lol
  • 1) what do you define as a godparent? (let's keep it short)  The way I was raised was a godparent is someone, usually a couple, who if the parents died, would raise the child.

    2) do you have godparents? Yes.

    3) are you a godparent to anyone's kids? Yes

    4) if you're KTFU, TTGKTFU, TATTGKTFUSITF (thinking about TTGKTFU sometime in the future) already have kids, etc... do you plan on (or do you already have) godparents for your kids? Have no plans at the moment, but we'll see

  • 1) what do you define as a godparent? (let's keep it short) I believe it's supposed to be someone who agrees to care for and raise your kids (in your faith) if you should pass.  IRL I think it becomes like a special aunt/uncle kind of role -- if you do godparents.

    2) do you have godparents? Sorta?  My mom was catholic, but my dad wasn't, so we were never baptized.  My mom always told us my grandma and uncle were, but it was never discussed and they never did anything different than they would as our grandma and uncle.

    3) are you a godparent to anyone's kids? No.

    4) if you're KTFU, TTGKTFU, TATTGKTFUSITF (thinking about TTGKTFU sometime in the future) already have kids, etc... do you plan on (or do you already have) godparents for your kids? No.  I'm not very religious, so I never really thought about it.  DH is more religious, I don't know if he cares.  I know he has a godmother that was his mom's friend and is sort of like an aunt to him.  If he wants to, we can talk about.  Either way, we'll need to do a will and designate who would care for our kids if we die...so I guess they'll be the "godparent"?

  • 1) what do you define as a godparent? (let's keep it short) I think that a godparent is someone who would care for the child if something were to happen to us. Though if for us it would probably be DH's brother.

    2) do you have godparents? No I do not.

    3) are you a godparent to anyone's kids? Nope.

    4) if you're KTFU, TTGKTFU, TATTGKTFUSITF (thinking about TTGKTFU sometime in the future) already have kids, etc... do you plan on (or do you already have) godparents for your kids? I actually haven't talked to DH about this. I don't know yet.

  • Just because it's been brought up...for us, godparents may or may not be the ones who would raise the children if something happened to the parents.  For example, if something were to happen to BIL and SIL, DH and I are listed in their will as the people who will take DH's nephews and raise them, but I'm not their godmother.  (DH is their godfather, though.)
