Families, what do you do on the weekends?
It's getting cooler and we are bored...we lack family activities. Back in the states, we had a boat and used that a bit as a family. My folks watched DS a lot so me and DH really were able to go out and about. I have a sitter here, but even then we find there isn't much we really want to do.
What kind of things do you do as a family, especially in this cooler weather?
I think we get cabin fever much quicker here because the houses are smaller.

Re: Families, what do you do on the weekends?
Bike riding, going to a park and trying to teach our dog new tricks, hanging out at the Sofitel (decent internet, coffee bar and a bed there!) and trying out new recipes. It's not that cold here yet, so it may be too cold for some of that with you. There isn't much to do in Turkmenistan, so this is why we have to leave once a month. Wish I could be more helpful.
Are there museums near you? Interesting markets? Easy day trips? Movies? Game night?
Go crazy.
But seriously, we go skiing, play board games, visit other cities in Switzerland, I do a lot of baking.
You mentioned a boat, do you sail? A lot of sailing schools here in NL rent boats almost all year round (maybe not in December and January) and some even give discounts in colder weather. So we do that sometimes if it is not really cold.
Your DS might still be too young but there are nice children museums around (we took DD to one last week and she really enjoyed it, we saw smaller children having fun too).. And of course there are always indoor playgrounds but I save these for when I want to get a headache.
Weekends here stress me out. I feel like we have to get all of our shopping done on Saturday, which leaves Sunday for getting all the non-shopping things we need to get done around the house.
Other than that, we go to museums, parks, travel and watch movies.
We go out: garden centres, shopping areas (often great spaces for kids to run around), soft plays, museums, parks with playgrounds or space to kick a ball, lunch at cafes (a big treat for W).
Or stick at home: baking, garden work (may not apply), board games and just playing and having family play time.
On the weekends I just feel it is so important to get out, at least if it isn't a downpour.
We go to our local playground, feed the ducks at a local park, go hiking (we have a hiking backpack for DS.) When DH does yard work DS loves being out there with his daddy. When we were in Korea and I could read what was going on we would at least go for a walk along the river. This is all for cooler weather. I haven't done the soft play centres here in the UK yet, but in Korea they were heavenly. (The staff play with your kid while DH and I would have a nice chat over a latte.)
Do you have a car? There's really more than enough to do year round, but you have way more options if you can take a quick drive somewhere.
We don't have kids, but usually on weekends we'll either drive somewhere or just hang around the house, cooking, baking, sitting in the yard (doing yardwork) or just have PJ-days with a book or a good movie. Often when I'm busy baking or cooking, FH will be busy with his photography.
Really, we're kinda hermits though, so don't listen to me
I know my friends with kids go to kinderboerderijen, the beach, nemo, children's museum, the woods (and then eat a humongous pancake at the pancake house), stuff like that. And as PP said, you're pretty much in the best place in the world for sailing, might be a little cold now, but next season, buy DS a life vest and rent a boat during the weekend! They rent 'em out with tents so you can stay away all weekend!

What I'm looking forward to in 2012:
Eating our way through (northern) Italy on vacation
<a href="http://www.thenest.com/?utm_source=ticker&utm_medium=HTML&utm_campaign=tickers" title="Home DWe take our pup to school on Sat mornings, DH works on the sauna (almost done) and we go see friends and family. When he's not working on the house (it's been 3 years) we used to go bike riding.
We do cook together on the weekends and bake too.
Oh yeah, bike riding is a good one too, then stop and get something warm to drink.
And to answer the original question: We get things done around the house, go for walks, and in general try to recover from the week. Usually between mid-October until early January every single weekend is booked with birthday get-togethers for DH's various family members and making the rounds for holiday visits.
