Come ON!

DH showed up at my office a couple hours ago....upset/fighting back tears.  I knew immediately the problem b/c there was no reason for him to be here.  He lost his job.  Which sucks A LOT.  But, we also lost our insurance.  I cancelled my individual plan to get on his group plan.  Now, the pregnancy cannot be covered on my old plan b/c it'd be a "pre-existing condition."  (at least this is my understanding right now.)  We're looking into any/all options at this point for coverage.  And he's getting in touch with unemployment immediately.  The situation sucks all around to happen right now.   I'm doing my  best to not stress.  But, I also feel so bad for DH.  He's so down and defeated.  Sigh.

Re: Come ON!

  • Oh Dollfinn, I'm so sorry. Y'all will get through this. ((HUGE hugs!))

  • Oh no. I'm so sorry, D. I'm sending lots of good thoughts and prayers that something comes through for him and fast.

If you want to talk I'm here.

  • Oh no! So sorry to hear this!

He should ask about COBRA. I am pretty sure they have to provide you the opportunity to continue health care for 6mos following termination. Your premium will be higher, but at least it will carry you through the pregnancy.

  • I am so sorry that this happened.

As for your insurance, I do not believe pregnancy can be considered a pre-existing condition because it is not an illness. Him losing his job should be able to be considered a "life event" which would allow you to re-enroll. If you were hired at a new company, you would not be excluded from insurance due to pregnancy.

  • Thanks ladies.  He's calling about cobra today.  I'm going to call my previous provider as well to check my options.  I just had an individual plan, my company doesn't have insurance.  When I added the maternity coverage, I remember it having to be in place for 30 days prior to pregnancy.....something like that.  Eh, I'll figure it out.

Now my boss' wife is on her way here for training.  (she's filling in for me while I'm on leave.)  I didn't know she was coming today.  Blah!  Dear Friday, I want a do over!

  • I am so sorry! I know it is a "business" decision but what a crappy thing to do right before the baby is born.

  • That's terrible, I'm so sorry.
  • That's awful.  I'm so sorry you're dealing with that.  What terrible timing!

  • I am so sorry. It may not be the ideal coverage, but you probably qualify for Medicaid to cover the remainder if your pregnancy and birth. (Not based off of income in situations like this)

  • I am so sorry!  I was totally in the same stuation when DH lost his job 2 months before I was due.  You guys should be able to get COBRA through his insurance to cover you guys, but t will be more expensive.  You should also be able to pick up your individual insurance again since DH losing his job is considered a life changing event.  I don't think they can count prengancy as a pre-existing condition since you have been insured the entire time you have been pregnant.  I know it is hard to see it right now but everything will work out!  If you ever want to chat or vent feel free to PM me.
