About a month or so ago, I accidentally sliced off the tip of my left thumb. It was a thin slice, the doctor just removed what was still attached and stitched together what he could. Not long after, I appeared to be "spitting" a stitch (I had three). All this time later, it's still sticking out of my thumb. I was told it would take "awhile" for all of this to heal, and I was prepared for that. But...there is more. And it gets a little gross, so if you're sensitive to grossness, stop here.
Okay, here comes the gross...
Just scrolling down for those that might not want to see it.
Okay, so the stitches are still sticking out, at least one. I can't just pull the strings loose; they appear to be attached to, well, SOMETHING. If I push around the outside of the strings, a little pus appears, kind of like if you're squeezing a zit. There are no signs of infection -- no heat, no redness (other than new, pink skin all around it) -- just a string, looped around, sticking out from my skin. It is still tender. Otherwise, there is no pain unless I accidentally jab my thumb onto something (which is surprisingly often...)
Do I go back into the clinic and pay to have them look at it again, or wait it out?
I apologize for the ick factor of this post. I figured most would be done with their dinner by now lol. TIA! (FWIW, I've never had stitches before, ever, despite my apparent clumsiness, so I'm a total newb at this.)
Re: Another would you be concerned?
I agree, I thought pus was a bad sign, too. I would go have it checked out or at least call. Although, I've never had stitches, so I might not be the best person to give advice.

Forgot to mention they were dissolvable stitches. I'll put a call in tomorrow. It doesn't ooze on its own, only when I pressed against it, and it's been healing well otherwise. I didn't really know what to expect from a wound such as this!
When I had my foot surgery, it turned out that I was allergic to dissolvable stitches. It caused a HUGE headache, and it was over four months before one of my incisions would properly heal. They even had to go in and re-open one of my incisions because a cyst had formed around a suture that was floating around in my leg. All in all, a delightful experience.
So I would definitely get it checked out, just to be safe.

WOW. I called, left a message and am waiting to hear back if they think I should come back in. It's like my body just "pushed" the stitches out. The area around it is irritated, and red, but there is no heat, no pain, unless I hit it just right and that stings like a mutha.
