S/O Morrigan's Post- Make-Up Help

I rarely wear make-up.  I suck at it. Seriously.  When I was in highschool I would put on liquid foundation, then one color of eye shadow smeared across my eyes, then mascara and lipstick.

When I went to college, I had a make-over at Ulta.  The girl showed me how to put a shimmery gold on my whole lid, a penny color in my crease, and a brown at the edges of my eye in lieu of eye-liner.  I added this to my routine instead of the one color of eyeshadow.

In the past 2 years, I think I have worn make-up less than 15 times.  I just feel like I don't put it on right, so what is the point?  I know some of you ladies seem to be make-up gurus.  Any tips for me?  Colors?  Application?  Brands?  I just feel totally lost when it comes to that stuff.

I suck, lol.

Re: S/O Morrigan's Post- Make-Up Help

  • I don't know either. I follow kind of what is on the back of the eyeshadow thing I get. I do the smae thing in lieu of eye liner since I can never do eyeliner right.

My routine usually is a bare minerals like powder, mascara, some bronzer, and one to two colors on my lids. If it is evening with DH I add some sparkly body powder on top. For lips - berts bees balm (rarely color).

  • I recommended a tinted moisturizer in lieu of foundation. They are rather easy to  apply and neturagena makes a great inexpensive one. I found that even on my busiest mornings, I can make time to put it on. It's like putting on lotion or sunscreen ( which technically is). I use the Smashbox brand which I  love but it's a little pricey.

For mascara- Cover Girl Lash Blast is awesome and affordable.

IT's also Sehora F&F and ULTA has a 20% coupon to help you stock up. I'm a believer in doing what looks good, but also what is realistic for you.

I  have more suggestions, but I have to head out to a meeting :(. I'll jump back on later.

  • Blue eyes, it'd be very appropriate to go with shades of brown for your eye shadow. If you want to glam it up, copper tones.

I went through a Sephora phase, but I've gone back to being an Avon and/or Mary Kay girl - it fits my budget and it works for me. My routine is powder, a neutral blush, eyeshadow, mascara, eyeliner ... and rarely do I acknowledge that I have lips.

ETA: Also a good face mosturizer under your make-up is key I think.

  • I agree with PP regarding getting a tinted moisturizer and using that instead  of foundation...it is much easier to apply and adds an SPF for your skin.  If you are not into wearing much makeup, I think that a basic tinted moisturizer, a little blush/bronzer and some mascara could be an easy routine to get into and doesnt look like you are wearing much makeup.  You could always add eyeliner and shadow on days you have more time or want to look a little more "polished."  Brown/bronze are always a good "go-to" for eye shadow colors for most skin tones, especially for fall.  A black or brown eyeliner would go nice with those colors.  Also, I love the new plum colored eye shadows and think it looks good with most skin tones also.  Eyeliner can be difficult but just keep practicing and you will eventually get the hang of it...just keep some makeup remover around :)

As for brands, I am exclusively a mark. girl.  They are a division of Avon, but much cheaper and geared a little more toward a younger crowd.  They have some really awesome products and they ship pretty quick.  The website is www.meetmark.com.  I sell it also so if you want to order anything let me know and I can get it for you or tell you about it...I have tried ALL the products, so I can give you a review of any of them.

  • Almay makes a type of shadow trio called i-Color... basically you select your eye color, and from there you can pick from different types of trios based on the look you want.  I also have blue eyes and I'm complimented a lot on my color choices when I wear these trios.  I've always had a hard time putting together eye shadow palettes and this simplified it for me.  They supposedly make your eye color pop... I think it's true.  http://www.almay.com/products/eyes/eyeshadow.aspx

My favorite makeup brand is MAC for sure.  Best concealer of all time, and I love their Lip Glass and other items like shimmer highlighters and blushes.  Their brushes are the best in the business, IMO.

Honestly, I get some of my best makeup tips and ideas from watching youtube tutorials.  Just type in "smoky eye tutorial," or whatever you're looking for, and watch some!  I get great hair ideas from there, too.

  • I agree that you watch some youtube videos to get an idea on what to use and how to apply it. For me personally, its not so much about the product but the application. Warning though, some of them videos will want you to spend $$$.

A good person to watch on youtube is EmilyNoel(insert something number here) I think 83. She is super down to earth, and a lot of the makeup she uses is drug store. In fact, I think she just posted a video a few weeks ago about an easy drugstore makeup routine for newbies. :)

I agree with this. I'm very visual when it comes to learning style tricks.

I would suggest a palette with a lot of different eye colors so that you can mess around with what you like. I'm in love with the Urban Decay naked palette and there are a lot of tutorials out there to give you different looks.

  • Thank you for all of the great tips ladies, I will definitely check out the brands you guys have recommended.  Also- youtube is a great idea, I never even thought of that.  Do you guys stick with the same brand for everything or do you tend to mix it up?
  • Like Star, I'm a MAC girl.  I also like the Stila eye shadows.  I'm a makeup snob in that I like the expensive stuff.  I always wear eye liner, a base shadow, then a darker shade in the crease, along with mascara.  I have a great concealer from MAC, but I just use their foundation powder.  It's light and doesn't make that line that you get with foundation.  I also use Clinique moisturizer.  I will be the first to admit that I LOVE makeup!

I mix it up. I  mix a lot of department store/higher end brands ( MAC,NARS blush, Laura Mercier face products, Urban Decay eye shadow, Clinique mascara and lipstick) with drugstore brands( Cover girl, L'oreal mascara). I tend to go with what works best for me and my wallet. A lot of of it is trial and error.  If I see something I love that works for me- I buy it - no matter the brand. Right now I'm loving a $7 L'oreal blush while my $27 Nars blushes collect dust.

There are brands I tend to lean toward more and I will try them when in doubt.  I also buy at places that take "mistakes" back.

I guess I will just have to start doing some trail and error and see what works for me.  I didn't even know that they made tinted moisturizers, so I am excited about trying that.  My skin on my face is really dry, so I think that could be good for me instead of foundation.  I think I am going to try the Urban Decay tinted moisturizer, it seems to have really good reviews.
