Mommas/Moms-to-be

What did you take for lunches? I was a lunch meat girl pre-pregnancy, so now I'm struggling with what to take! HELP!   I have a short lunch break by the time the kids head to lunch, so it can't be too involved (i.e...long time to microwave)

Re: Mommas/Moms-to-be

  • I'm a total lunch meat, girl, too, so I know it's going to suck.

Do you like pasta salad?  I like to make a big batch of it and take it all week.  Or soups that you can reheat.

  • I can do some pasta salad as long as its not over-seasoned...maybe I'll do that part of the week.   Of course, the feeling crappy phase of pregnancy has set in over the weekend, so not a whole lot even sounds good anymore (I passed on a georgetown cupcake on Saturday...that's bad!)
  • In that case, pack whatever tastes good.  Chips and dip.  Cereal.  Popcorn.  Whatever you can eat!

  • We would just make extra of whatever we were having for supper and I'd have left-overs the next day for lunch.  I don't mind left-overs though, some people do.

If you like it, you could do a tuna sandwich every once in awhile.

I also would just bring lots of "snacks" type things: Yogurt, granola bars, Fruit-to-go bars, veggies and dip, fruit, cheese and crackers, etc.

  • My doctor did not prescribe to the no lunch meat rule, so I didn't have a problem there. She actually had pretty strong feelings about all the "restrictions"..but I digress. I also craved tuna..gasp! (She said tuna was fine one time a week)

I did also (and still do) salad with protein. If we were having chicken, I'd cook extra and then chop it up over a salad etc.

    I like the salad idea...thanks!

  • For this crappy phase I carried around a ton of premeasured snacks. I couldn't eat a lot, but had to eat often. Tomatoes settled my stomach so I'd have a baggie of cherry tomatoes, pretzels, chicken salad with crackers, cucumbers, cheese sticks, peanut butter crackers, etc. The more protein you can get in, the more settled your stomach will be.

  • Thanks...I was reading that protein helps....I had DH pick up mixed nuts for me.  I will have to get pb crackers too.
  • I just ate the lunch meat. ::gasp::  ;)

  • I've always said that when I'm pregnant, if I'm craving a hot dog, I'm going to have a friggin' hot dog.  If I want a spicy italian sub from Subway, I'm going to get it.  While I might not make it a point to eat lunch meat as often as I do now, I sure as hell am not going to cut it out completely.  Horror of horrors, when I get into the 3rd trimester and haven't had a beer in 6 months, I'll probably con my husband into letting me take a few hits off his every now and then.

Everything in moderation... including moderation. :)

  • I asked my doctor about the lunch meat thing one of my first appointments. Her response was that if I knew where it was coming from (ie a reputable grocery store as opposed to like a 'roach coach' type deal) and if it wasn't too old (ie starting to get slimy) I would be fine. I did eat deli meats throughout my pregnancy. I didn't eat it everyday for lunch. I would always heat up left overs from the night before.

  • I'm not a momma to be yet, but I've been cutting down on my deli meat for a long time since I haven't been working and taking a lunch every day like I did when I worked. I would go with maybe leftovers, something easy you could reheat quickly, PB&J sandwiches, I love snack type meals and often do like cheese (of course pasteurized, I love Baby Bel Gouda) and crackers, an apple (with or without pb), carrots and ranch, cereal and a small container of milk, salad with tons of veggies and chicken, hard boiled eggs. There are lots of possibilities, for ease I would usually boil a couple chicken breasts and shred them and then toss them over a salad, or make a big batch of hard boiled eggs, I did both all the time when I was working for quick lunches/snacks. HTH!

  • I'm in a not liking lunch meat phase, so I eat yogurt almost every day for lunch. I buy a big thing of plain yogurt (usually chobani) and add my own fruit--berries of some kind. I also flavor it was either a little bit of honey or a small amount of regular vanilla yogurt (as in not greek yogurt). The plain greek yogurt is very tangy so I need something to flavor it.

I also really like chicken salad sandwiches, you can make a big batch at the beginning of the week and eat it for a few days that week.

  • I'm not a lunch meat eater, but here's what I do for lunch:

-Salad with protein, raw nuts, dried fruit, veggies (peas, carrots, peppers, etc...)
    -chicken salad
    -leftovers from dinner
    -Hummus and veggie wraps

  • I personally am a peanutbutter kind of gal.  I ate a lot of peanutbutter and banana sandwiches.  I also kept graham crackers with me all the time to snack on if I had an upset tummy.

haha...hmm, maybe this lunch meat thing isn't as big a deal as thebump & baby center make it!

  • I ate lunch meat a few times a week. Other options I did was leftovers from the night before, chicken salad sandwiches, salads with some sort of chicken or other protein (including lunch meat cut up or eggs). My doctor wasn't too concerned about it so neither was I. I also ate like 6+ servings of fruit a day since I craved it so much during my whole pregnancy.

Listen to your doctor. My doctor only had concerns with excessive seafood and fish (neither of which I eat lol)

There are a lot of people who spend their time on "what ifs." The bumpies drive me nuts for that reason.

    No offense to anyone intended.

  • Glad I brought this up!  first time mom = guilty of over reading the bump/baby center! lol   Thank goodness I have you girls to help me!!
  • My doc was a "everything in moderation" kind of guy.  As long as I wasn't snarfing down pounds of turkey meat he was fine. He even said I could have sushi(gasp!) once in a rare while.

That being said, at one point I ate only chef boyardee raviolis for lunch AND dinner. It was super gross. I haven't eaten them since my first trimester.

  • I asked my doctor about lunch eat and she kind of giggled and told me not to worry about it.  That said, I still heated my lunch meat for a few seconds in the microwave before eating it in my first trimester- do you have a microwave at work you could do that with?

  • Sorry you're feeling sick! Right now, I'm just eating whatever I can keep down. It varies, but I second the cherry tomato idea--so yummy! Plain chicken, pickles, cheese, and cold brown rice tend to be okay too. This sounds weird and definitely not nutritious, but sometimes munching on a few salt and vinegar chips before eating lunch has helped me keep more down... Oh, and if all else fails, smoothies!

  • What is this no-lunch-meat thing you speak of? Haha. I was never told this, and ate lunch meat throughout my pregnancy. I'm pretty sure she turned out ok Wink
  • I avoided deli meat, but not things like garlic sausage, etc.  Also I ate frozen yogurt and other things that they say has the possibility for listeria.

Mainly the reason I avoided deli meat is because I was mentioning to my high school students that you aren't supposed to eat it and one of the boys who works in the deli at a grocery store said "yeah, after working in the deli I would never eat that lunch meat", which skeeved me out!
