Now that we have a baby on the way we have decided to finally buy a nice camera. I have never had anything but basic point & shoot cameras, but I guess we'll try a SLR or DSLR...other than the abbreviations I don't know anything about them! I want something not too big, simple to use (meaning that if I don't take the time to learn all of the fabulous settings I can still use it and take good pictures), and not too expensive. I have no clue what these camera cost either, so I can't give a price range right now. I would LOVE to get some suggestions!!
Re: help with a new camera
MIL uses a Nikon D3100 pretty basic and pretty easy for her to get the hang of, she's had it for quite a few years and it serves her basic needs plus has given her room to learn how to work a DSLR. She did buy a kit and ended up investing in a better lens, If you are getting a camera to take photos of your little one I'd suggest buying the body and then buying a decent lens like a 35mm or 50mm. Before you do that go to the store and see how you feel holding the camera and see what feels best for you (Cannon and Nikon).
I am about to purchase a new DSLR. I think that I am going to go with the Nikon D90, over the D5100 & D3100. If you are looking for a decent camera and aren't sure that you want to get serious with it. Look at the D5100 or D3100.

I am wanting a better camera, but I'm a little nervous about the DSLRs so a friend of mine that is a photographer suggested the Nikon Coolpix L120. It has more functionality than a point and shoot, but is easy to use and takes great pics. It has really good reviews so I'm hoping it will be birthday present for me next month ;-)
Good luck!
my suggestion depends on what you're looking for. Are you looking for something you can bring anywhere and will fit in your purse or diaper bag? because if this is what you're expecting to do I would not get a DSLR because it is definitely not convenient. I am infact looking for a more compact camera ( I have a DSLR ) as much as a I love my DSLR it is not practical and convenient. I will still use it but I would like a smaller camera I can lag around that fits in my purse or the diaper bag, because my DSLR definitely needs a separate bag. Another one to consider is, will you be investing on lenses if not then settling for a compact SLR or mirrorless camera is more practical and a little less expensive but still gives the same quality photos. There are some compact SLR that has interchangeable lenses too incase you do want to invest on lenses.
Nikon, Canon, Olympus are good a friend has a Sony its pretty good but Im just loyal to Canon lol.
Urg. IDK what I want!! I do not want something huge. I do not want something that I must have multiple lenses for. Okay, so say I were to go with a SLR, can you give me an example of a camera that is that type so I can look it up?
Okay, this one is a SLR like Junie suggested also. It is almost $700. Is that what I can expect to pay?? And what if I don't buy a different lens....will it take fine pictures still?

for what you are using it for yes, the kit lens will do. Once you get the hang of the camera you may not be satisfied with the lens. at that point you may want to get another lens. You will most def need to use the flash indoors with the kit lens.
I use BHphotovideo.com and adorama.com for all of my equipment. their showing the kit right now for $549 and free shipping. I've never had a problem ordering from either of these companies.
Edit: I will also add I have a sony for my point and shoot needs. basically an advanced P&S sony cybershot lets you change a lot of the settings for when the little one moves around a little more and you don't get the motion blur
I actually LOL'd when I read your comment, that was my exact response when they sent me the link to it! Some of the DSLRs send shivers down my spine.
thanks again!
LoL glad I'm not the only one! I hope you get your birthday wish!
