Breaking up and weight gain

So, did anyone else gain weight when they broke up?  I have been in the midst of "leaving" for a while (which means, gaining my courage).  I'm out now, and much happier.  But man, nothing in my closet fits.  I gained 20 pounds during this past year of turmoil.

I have a New Years vacation planned with a couple close friends, and an island vacation with family planned for March.  Short term goal is not feeling like a sloth for the first vacation, and not feeling uncomfortable in a bathing suit for the second, but man, it's hard.

I'm very much focused on myself right now, feeling good, looking good, feeling strong, etc, but changing these habits is HARD. I just signed up for kick boxing with a friend and joined a local gym.  Can't wait until I feel good in my skin again (and clothes) again.  I guess the best revenge is to thrive, but somehow I still need some extra motivation!!  Anyone in my area do any 10ks? A meet up would be so welcome!

Re: Breaking up and weight gain

  • I actually usually loss weight after a break-up and gain it once I am in a relationship.

I run and have done a couple 10Ks, What is your area?  You don't have a location listed.

This is me as well.  I lost 20 pounds as I was going through my divorce last year, and have now gained it back.

  • When I left, I was gaunt and not very healthy looking.... I've plumped up a bit more than I'd like so I'm trying to lose about 5-10lbs... right around the holidays. Yeah, I think that's really going to work :)
  • I lost weight when I left because I couldn't eat from grief/anxiety/breakup in general and I was exercising my feelings out.  Are you eating your feelings?  Emotional eating is very common and therapy can help to get over the breakup and emotional eating.

Everyone processes a breakup differently.  Turn turning that negative energy into exercise--it will help keep you healthy and sane.  Good luck!

  • I lost weight after breaking up with my ex (the first time). I found walking helped me keep busy and focus on something else. This led to signing up for the gym and ACTUALLY going lol! When I get in to a relationship I usually gain a bit but this time I'm going to do my best not to.

You are completely right that the best thing to do is to live well! Nothing says "I'm awesome" like taking good care of yourself.

  • I've lost 50lbs since XH and I split up and I couldn't be happier. I lost the first 15-20lbs of it the unhealthy way -- I was too upset/emotional to eat much and the weight just fell off. Once I got out of my slump, my weight loss motivated me to start doing it the RIGHT way. I've been watching what I eat (and portions) and getting more active. I still have another 20-30lbs to go, but I'm so much happier with the person I am now.

  • I lost 230 lbs!  Oh, wait, that was the ex.  I was pregnant when we split but when I'm grieving I struggle to eat so I actually only gained about 24 lbs during my pregnancy because I literally forced myself to eat.  After I had DS I was still grieving but also EBF so the combo caused me to lose weight rapidly.

WW is a great diet plan if you are interested and I also like the H&F board for great, healthy living advice.  I also got into jogging and ran my first half marathon.  I would recommend that to anyone, it was very therapeutic.

  • I dropped 20 pounds in the first 5 weeks after stbxh announced that he wanted a divorce.  It was not healthy but I got to lose the pregnancy weight.

Now I am noticing I am gaining weight as I am feeling much better and started eating more.  I don't want to gain so I am going to do some healthy menu planning (as soon as stbxh get out of the house as he has 2 weeks to do so).

I also got a biggest loser workout dvd and a couple of dance dvds.  I am going to Hawii in Jan so that will be my motiviation.

  • I loose weight when I'm sad. However, since my ex was a total creep and he would guilt trip me if I ever wanted to eat something yummy like ice cream, I went a little nuts after I got over the constant nausea, and I gained 25 pounds.
  • Add me to the lost weight after group.  I didnt really do it intentionally either, I focused more on me at the time, went to the gym, therapy and the weight just sort of went, I started to gain a bit back in my current relationship but didnt like it and got it back off.

I also recommend WW for losing weight and my workout now since I have no time for the gym is running.

  • i was the opposite, i was so stress free and happy once i told EX i wanted a divorce.  granted now my schedule is so hectic i can't make it to my gym at work  anymore, so i have lost some muscle tone and i can tell when i'm lifting that i've gotten weaker.

i used to do boxing all the time and it was a blast, so i'm sure you will have fun with the kick boxing.  i will say that after the sessions with my trainer every part of my body hurt, but it felt good.  once i get everything settled and some bills paid off and my house rented i can probably start doing that again.  but if you go at it really hard for an hour, you will shed the weight and notice a lot of new muscle tone, it gets fun and once you get yourself into the routine you will feel that motivation to keep it up.
