I have a dilemma, I applied for a bunch of jobs in my field in the D.C./VA area a couple months ago when we were told we were for sure getting orders to the area, well that's all changed to Maryland near Baltimore now (supposedly, we STILL don't have orders in hand, but that's a whole other story of frustration!). I got called today from one of the potential employers in Northern VA to interview. I'm not sure what I should do. I was hoping these places would be willing to do phone interviews in the interim since I'm not in the area for another few weeks, but aside from the interview logistics aspect, I'm now wondering if I should even waste the potential employer's time since I googled and found out my commute from our new location to the job would be about 50 miles, 1+ hour drive without taking into account D.C. traffic, which I know is killer. I'm thinking this is just no longer feasible.
So my question is WWYD? Would you call them back and agree to an interview if it's by phone and just get the practice (don't forget it's been 2+ years since I've been employed in my field, but had some interviews before leaving my last job and of course a ton before I got my last job)? Or thank them for the opportunity but respectfully decline since I'm thinking even if I was offered the position I wouldn't be accepting it given our change of plans and the commute? Or special snowflake?
Re: WWYD? Job Related
I would see if they will do the phone interview and if so, go ahead and do that. That will:
a) give you the interview experience and
b) give you more time to decide on whether or not the commute would be worth it.
PS, I can't believe they are still jerking you guys around! I thought DC was a for sure thing. I'm sorry you have to deal with all of this still.
A lot of people make the commute all over that area. If you are stationed near Baltimore, totally can either live halfway between or take the train between cities. No matter where you are, traffic is a bizatch in the area. It is always better if you can take public transportation versus trying to drive on either beltway.
My sister lives in Norther Virginia, but works in Maryland. She commutes 4 days and works from home on Wednesdays. Anywhere else in the country we'd freak at the commute (hello, my commute here is 5 minutes pre-daycare, 30 now). When I lived in Maryland it was totally normal to drive well over an hour and only go a few miles.
Moral of the story, I would go to as many interviews as possible. Southwest flies into BWI when you need a cheap flight. If you travel on the weekends BWI to NoVa is less than an hour.

What are you looking at?
I would ask if you could get a phone interview first- if not I would take the in person interview. Sounds like it wouldn't hurt to get some interview practice.
50 miles to me seems like an average commute- people I work with in Minneapolis drive from Wisconsin every day and have 1 plus hour commutes. Lots of them do park and ride and take the bus or car pool. Maybe you could even see if you could work from home a couple days of the week.
Thanks for the advice girls! I called back and asked if they'd consider doing a remote interview by phone or Skype, they're going to talk with HR and get back to me.
Maria and Mary, I would def try public transit (i.e. the Metro or commuter buses) rather than try the commute by car, thanks for helping me see it's not that big a deal, I'm just so used to living in the boondocks now and 50 miles sounds like a very long way.
Meghan, I haven't looked yet, like I said, we still don't even have papers in hand that we are for sure going there, it was dropped on us during T's R&R that we'd most likely be going to MD. I am not counting on anything since supposedly DC was a "for sure" thing and then fell through. It's even more frustrating when we are supposed to be moving in 5-6 weeks and don't even have confirmation that that is where we are in fact going. Needless to say I'm slowly losing my mind. I think I'd be willing to commute if we lived close to a train stop and the office wasn't far from a stop or had a bus or something to the office.
ETA: I should say train stop or commuter lot (park and ride) or whatnot, just something nearby or somewhat easily accessible.
