what's the trick to sewing fleece?

I'm trying to make fleece scarves for a co-worker's daughters' cheer team.

my machine is dropping stitches like they are hot! I can't get more than an inch sewn before it drops stitches.and I'm not talking 1 or 2, its about a whole bunch before I realize none have caught. I have 3 strips of fleece and using poly thread. I have tension @ ~1 (dial goes from 0 -9) and the stitch length is on the long side.

I have no idea what to do :(

I don't want to give up on this project, this co-worker does so much for my pups!

  • Bigger needle?  I have trouble with fleece and usually a new needle helps.

  • Try a new needle like pp said. Your needle needs to be sharp for fleece projects.

  • good point. the needle is new-ish, but they are cheap enough so i will go to joann's on my lunch tomorrow. and if i'm making 13 scarves, how often should i swap out a new needle? should i use a larger gauge? i was using a 11g i think.

  • A universal point needle, size 11 or 12 should work for most fleece.  Some Polartec fleece (specifies) heavier though.

You should change needles when starting a new project, and some fabrics (fleece included) dull needles quickly and may need to be changed more frequently.

  • thanks!
