reapplying??

I am seeking opinion as to whether I should bother reapplying for this position or not.

I just saw that a position I interviewed for in May is back online today.

A little back story...this is a small biotech company (15 or so people) that specializes in something that happens to be very similar to what I was doing previously. I did the phone screening, was invited for a 5-hour long interview. Each hour was with 2 different people. Some where technical questions, some behavioral. I'm very qualified for this position and my background is an exact match. I felt great about the interview.  I remember during the interview, the lady who would have been my boss mentioned twice how I will be an asset because of my previous work blah blah...and how she'll be in touch by the end of the week. When I left the interview I thought to myself I could totally do this and felt good about the culture of company based on the interactions I had...

I sent written thank you notes to everyone the next day. I followed up by calling a week later. A day or two after the date they told me they'll make a decision by. I didn't hear anything back. I followed up again a week after that... Nothing.

Of all the interviews I've had this is the one that puzzled me the most to this day. For the longest time I tried to figure it out in my head...

Now that I see the same exact job posting is up, I can't help but think, did they not end up hiring anyone after all? did they hire someone and it didn't work out? Should I email them again and casually mention how I interviewed for this position and I'm still interested in the position? It's a small company and my background is so specific that I can't imagine she'll not remember me (if not by my background, definitely by my foreign sounding name).  At the same time I think to myself, do I want to work with these people if they never acknowledged any of my follow-ups after the interview?? I'm so conflicted.

I don't know. What would you do if you were in my situation?  ps. husband thinks since it's a small company with the exact same group/people I interviewed with that it'll be awkward for both parties.

WWYD??

thanks! and sorry for writing a novel.

Re: reapplying??

  • I'd definitely reapply. The only awkwardness is on their end as it sounds like you were as professional as they come. You expressed interest, had an adequate background, interviewed well, followed up correctly, but didn't stalk them, etc.

You never know--it's possible someone had an "in" with the company and was hired...only for all parties to find out later it wasn't a great fit. Or maybe they decided to delay filling that position for some internal reason. Just because you weren't chosen the first time around doesn't mean this job wouldn't be great for you. They could even all be sitting around kicking themselves for not hiring you when they had the chance.

And the most obvious reason: even if they say no (which is the worst case scenario here...) you're in the exact same position you're in now.

So I say go for it and good luck!

  • It is very common for companies to not get back to you when you don't get a job. And there are a million reasons you didn't get it. These can include loss of funding, scaling back because of hte economy (and the CEO may just decide that one morning), hiring someone else who didn't work out, hiring someone else who moved on already, reorganization, adding an additional person to the team, etc.

I would either e-mail or call the HR/hiring person you talked to earlier. Explain that you interviewed for the job in May and you're still interested in the position. See what they have to say.

The only awkwardness would be temporary if you get another interview. I'm pretty sure most of the people would greet you warmly, and you may get some insight into what happened the last time.

  • Okay I'll send an email today and deal with the awkwardness if they actually do reply. And you're right it'll probably be temporary. Is this short email good, you think?

    Dear Ms. Smith:

This is .......  I interviewed for the Associate Scientist position with you and your team back in May. I noticed that the job is posted again on x's website. I'm still very interested in this position. I think that my skills and x (specific technique) experience is a great match for this position and I look forward to hearing from you.

    Sincerely,

    me

I would call and touch base with Ms Smith, reintroduce yourself and let her know you want to reapply, and tell her to expect an e-mail from you shortly. And I'd strengthen the e-mail, more like a cover letter.

    Dear Ms Smith,

As weI discussed in our phone call this morning, I am writing to apply for the Associate Scientist position as posted on X website. As a graduate of XYZ school with # years of experience in (specific technique), I would make a great asset to the team. Blah blah blah outlining your fabulousness.

My resume is enclosed for your consideration. I can be reached at (phone) and (e-mail). I look forward to hearing from you.

    Sincerely, honeydew

  • Thank you Dr. L, very helpful! Will make the changes to the email.

I've gotten pretty good at doing follow up calls but I feel so SO nervous to call this lady for whatever reason. It's not like she's going to cuss me out..what's the worst that could happen...but I've been practicing over and over and I just can't dial the number.  ugh

  • Id give it a try! Not the same situation, but i applied for several positions within the same company and finally got one! It sounds like youre really interested, so why not! :) good luck
  • After practicing in my head a 100 times, I finally dialed her number, it went to her answering machine. I waited 5 hours and called again, it went to her voice message again so I left a message and then sent her an email also with what Dr L suggested. I didn't hear back (yet).
