Pee in a jug.

Following up to my earlier post, I went to the doctor and they ordered a 24-hour urine collection. I know a few of you on the board have had to do it during pregnancy, so I'm sure you can all tell me how fun it is.

Good news is that she looked at all of the lab work from the insurance company, and she said that based on all of my numbers as a whole, I am most certainly NOT diabetic, and my kidney function is "beautiful."

She suspects that the protein in the urine is probably from something innocuous--dehydration, overexertion, stress, etc.--but there is always the chance for something more serious. So, they cut right to the chase and are going to do the 24-hour collection instead of a "spot urine" test, just to get a good answer from the get-go. And, she said if it comes back normally, they will write a nasty letter to the insurance company telling them they are ridiculous.

And, for the moment anyway, it appears that I'm not dying or anything. Yay!

Re: Pee in a jug.

  • Glad to know that you are not dying. ;-) And, that they could put your mind at ease.

    Continues Ts&Ps heading your way.

  • Great news!

and yes, I am a "Pee Jug Vet" at least 5 times over.  It's AWESOMELY fun.  I never had to keep mine in the fridge though (some docs ask for that).  Here is my pee jug tip for you.  If you didn't get anything to pee in and transfer, a red solo keg/beer cup works really well.  aaaaaaaand TMI.

  • Glad you're not dying! Have fun with the peeing in a jug! Big Smile

  • Glad they were able to ease your mind for now.  T&P that everything comes back good after the 24H collection.

  • I haven't seen the original post, but good luck! Hope all is well.

The 24 hour test, though a PITA, isn't THAT bad... hopefully they gave you a funnel thing? lol

  • Glad to hear you're not dying! Smile Hopefully this will all be straightened out soon!

  • I am glad to hear that the doctor's put your mind at ease.  I hope all goes well, and you have good news soon!
  • Heather, not sure what your background story is on this (how it started) but this happened to me a few years ago at the OB/GYN, so wanted to share my story to make you feel better.

I went in for my annual and after the "pee in the cup test" they told me, "you have protein in your urine and need to get this tested". Great. So I went to the GP and they did the spot urine test. Still had protein. The GP was a moron and told me this is usually seen in patients with kidney failure and they needed to run a bunch of tests.

Nothing like having a doctor basically come out and say "you have kidney failure!" Anyway, I had to have blood drawn and do the 24-urine test - not fun. This also came back with protein. By this time, I was almost hysterical didn't know what was going on. My FIL is an endocrinologist and a smart doctor in general, so when DH is telling him about this ordeal he goes, "does she exercise before these tests?" DH said yes, she exercises every day. So FIL basically said...well that's the cause right there. Tell her to stop exercising and test again. So I did. And guess what? No protein. The GP doctor was baffled and I was mad they couldn't have warned me not to exercise.

But it all ended well. My lesson? Never exercise before any urine test, if I can help it Stick out tongue. Turns out the stress during exercise was causing the protein - and that's fairly common!

I'll keep my figures crossed your results are similar and nothing to worry about! And remember, no exercise before or during the tests! lol

  • Thanks, all, and thanks, Jen! They did ask me about exercise... sadly, I have not been doing any real exercise since Nora, as I just don't have a lot of time.

In fact, the week leading up to the test was the week that I was sick with some sort of dizziness/nausea thing, so I was practically bedridden for five days, so I can't imagine anything I did prior to the test could be seen as overexertion or exercise, haha. But, who knows--maybe being sick affected things, too. I'm curious to see what will happen with the 24 hour collection. Fingers crossed!

  • You'll rock it!

  • I started having to do this for kidney function in 7th grade when I had my first stone. I've had to do them for 48 hours too! You don't want a whiff of that when you open the jug!

I always kept mine in a cooler with ice instead of the fridge... just couldn't handle the thought of pee next to the food.
