Homemade apron

Hi ladies - I don't usually post here but I need your help.  I am making my mom an apron for Christmas (per her request) but it will be a basic functional apron, not the more popular vintage decorative ones.  She is a big cook/baker and more practical than anything.  I am trying to figure out what kind of cloth would be best - oilcloth, canvas?  Should I just walk around the store and check out different weights?  Any other thoughts?

Also, I was thinking that 1.5 yards should be enough (she's 5'2" and thin) but am open to advice!

Re: Homemade apron

  • there's a ton of tutorials out there, just google- that might also give you a better idea about yardage (I'm the LAST person you want math-y advice from!). I have a canvas apron, and one that's a lighter fabric (cotton/poly blend?) I'm not convinced one is better than the other. I would probably just pick whatever fabric i thought my mom would like and felt right (and in my budget) and go with that one. Good luck!

  • I would pick out the fabric based on print more than type (within reason... a chiffon apron probably isn't the best idea). I have aprons of various fabrics and it doesn't really make a difference to me. I just grab whichever is cleanest and closest.

If you're new to sewing, I would strongly recommend a pattern. And a pattern should tell you how many yards it will require.

  • Thanks ladies - last night I measured an apron I'll probably use as a template and I think I could even do one yard (maybe shorten it a touch b/c my mom is shorter).  I am not new to sewing however I usually stick to curtain, pillows, etc -  nothing like this.
