charitable giving at work

I work for a non-profit and we have a staff goal for our annual giving program. We are under our goal right now so we are getting a lot of emails about giving. I have already made my gift.

So, poll!

Does your employer have a workplace giving program (United Way, CFC, your own organization)?

Is there an expectation to give?

Do you give?

Do you resent it?

Re: charitable giving at work

  • I really, really hate any pressure to donate money at work. Some companies really go overboard with it.

I'm a fed, so we have the CFC program, which is underway now. Thankfully, there is no pressure. I've never donated through CFC or United Way. I don't really see the point of donating through a middleman instead of giving my money directly to an organization. These groups just increase overhead/administrative costs.

  • Does your employer have a workplace giving program (United Way, CFC, your own organization)? - Yes - we have our own annual campaign.

Is there an expectation to give? It's not mandatory, and you aren't reported to anyone if you don't give, but I would feel awkward not giving in the position I hold. I don't give through United Way, though - I give directly to the other organizations I support.

    Do you give? Yes

Do you resent it? No - I believe in our mission and don't mind donating to support it.

Is there an expectation to give? We have to give to our organization through UW so our boss can say there's 100% giving on the part of the staff/board when she writes the UW grant.  Otherwise, I don't know if there's really an expectation, but it's certainly encouraged/appreciated.

Do you give? I haven't yet, but I will.

Do you resent it? Not really...I understand the reason for the required UW giving and I don't feel obliged to give otherwise.  I might anyway.

We have our own giving program.

Is there an expectation to give?

No, and if there is any sort of expectation it is a time commitment not a financial one.

    Do you give?

    Yep.

    Do you resent it?

No.  I give what I'm able and I feel good about the work we do.

Agree.  If we have a formal program with United Way at work, it must not be very forceful because I can't remember it.  We do get regular reminders that the company's foundation will send matching gifts to schools and charitable organizations, which I think is a much gentler and sensible way to go about it.  The end-organizations get the money directly from the giver and the company, and there is no pressure on the employees to meet a particular goal for giving.
