s/o china.. crystal

Seeing the poll and questions on china made me wonder about crystal. So, do you have crystal stemware? Do you use it? How often? How did you acquire it?

Last Christmas my mom gave me her crystal which she got as a wedding gift in 1947. We used the cordials to toast my DH new job after being unemployed for almost 2 years. We plan to have a formal dinner party near the holidays for some friends. That will be the first time we use several of the pieces.

Re: s/o china.. crystal

  • I have 4 Waterford crystal wine glasses I got as a wedding gift and never use them b/c crystal supposedly can't go in the dishwasher (it can pit the crystal and make it cloudy), and I'm too lazy to handwash things.

My mom said I could have her Waterford Lismore pieces, but I know they'll never get used for the same reason.  Plus if anyone broke them I'd be super pissed.

  • I have a set of crystal rocks glasses but that's it (well, also a crystal decanter). I wouldn't mind having some finer glassware but crystal doesn't appeal to me much.

  • I have almost all of my crystal (ice tea, red wine, white wine, most champagne) and they have hardly been used.

Me too. Even though the china comes out, the crystal usually stays in. I figure I should sell the lot of it somewhere but I know that some special people gave us those pieces.

  • I need more crystal, it's what I'm missing the most.

Amy, if your mom ever wants to sell hers, let me know!

  • We use them all the time. I love them. Back in my pre-preg drinking days I would have a glass of wine in them each night. I have several different kinds ~ ones we got for our wedding, ones from my grandmother, ones we bought in London, ones we bought in Amsterdam, one glass that my friend Courtney's aunt gave me, a couple that my friend Courtney gave me etc... I have loved each of them! Now I sometimes drink water out of them just because. but when I'm drinking again - watch out.
  • We didn't register for crystal, although I love it. I just figured I'm going to get my parents' one day (preferably many many many years from now), and didn't expect we'd get much of it if we registered anyway.

  • My feelings towards crystal are the same for china. Everybody needs a touch of fancy here and there.
  • We got quite a bit of our china, but we only got a few pieces of crystal & a few settings of silverware.  Many times I don't use my china because I don't like paring up my pretty dishes with our icky silverware.  I'm actually considering selling my 4 crystal goblets before we move overseas & treating ourselves to a full set once we return.

Because I knew I wouldn't be registering for silver, we instead registered for a more formal-looking set of stainless (rrr already had 8 settings of a decent stainless). We keep it in the china cabinet silverware drawer, and only hand wash it.

  • I have some really gorgeous glasses that were my great grandmothers but they aren't actual crystal. I do have a few crystal pieces and they never ever get used.

  • We didn't register for crystal.  It just wasn't my thing.  We also just got stainless steel, but I love my set.  We were gifted a set of everyday use flatware that we use now, and I save the stainless for when I pull out the china.

I have a full set of this pink floral china that was my grandmothers also.  I've used the plates and teacups for a baby shower.  My mom's china has little yellow flowers on it and she's got matching bronze-tinted goblets.  They make me giggle...so 70's.  My step-grandparents found her a set of gold-plated flatware at an auction recently that actually goes really well with her china.  It isn't my sisters thing, so likely it will all end up in my house.

  • We have a lot of crystal.  We got 10 white wine and 8 goblets and 4 champagne flutes.  Plus, I have Tiffany, Waterford, and other crystal decanters and pitchers, which I mostly display and occasionally use the pitchers.  I have Kosta Boda and Nambe crystal candle sticks that I use for the few parties we gave.  I rarely use the crystal glasses because they are very delicate (another thing my MIL has criticized - "they are too delicate"  - bite me.  My young son has used the water goblets several times and has not broken them.  We also put them in the dishwasher in crystal cucle).  We have Reidel Vinum glasses that I use very often and also wash in the dishwasher (on regular cycle - we never use the heat dry because it is a waste of electricity).
  • I didn't register for crystal.  I knew we would have a hard enough time getting place settings from our registry so I prioritized those since we already had more wine glasses (for red and white) than we could actually use when hosting a dinner party.

However, another nestie sold hers to me for an awesome price so I have them but have not yet used them.  They have platinum banding at the top but I'm not sure what pattern they are - I'd have to ask her!
