Couponing

Watching Extreme Couponing on TLC makes me want to start doing so!

Do any of you ladies do so?

Re: Couponing

  • i don't do it. but i wish that i used coupons more often. we never get any sort of fliers in the mail so i never see coupons.. i'd have to go out of my way to buy a sunday paper. i wonder if it would be worth the savings...

i definitely don't think i'd be extreme by any means but i know you can buy sunday papers at the dollar tree for a dollar. and i'm sure i would get atleast $2 in savings if i actually looked. I just don't have space for 12 toothpastes and a life supply of toilet paper. :)

  • I tried for awhile but had trouble finding things that I wanted (trying to avoid processed foods). I might give it a shot again though.

  • There are also some websites where you can print coupons plus use the ones that come in the paper. Maybe I should set a day aside for this...

couponconnections.com taught me everything i know. she's based in lynnwood, so all of her deals are very local, and apply to me. using her website, led me to others in the seattle area (queenbee coupons, frugallivingnw) etc....

Basics would be what I would want to buy - I might have to check it out again...

  • I don't understand how the Extreme Couponers get all of that for free... or get hundreds of $s worth of stuff for pennies. I understand that they say they combine manufacturers coupons with store coupons and sales. I just don't understand how that adds up enough to equal free. I see that they fill their carts with lots of crap that I would never eat, so part of the problem is that I don't find coupons for the food items that I want. However, I really want to get some household basics that they always seem to find... soap, tooth paste, tooth brushes, TP, paper towels, detergent... how do I get that for free? Oh, and did I mention, free cookies, candy, cake, Twinkies and other junk would make me really popular with my daughter's friends. I can find deals on things kids love... like Chips Ahoy and Oreos... but, the deals are whacky... like, buy 5, yes FIVE packs, and get $1 off. Um, that's .20 off of each... which hardly makes it worth my while to clip the coupon and cart it around. The deals I find seem lame. Do they just hang on to those tiny discounts and combine them somehow?

  • This is my exact take on it! how do they make it happen? sometimes I think its just a TV thing. you can obviously tell the store is shut down for them!

From what I have gathered from watching it is that they collect multiple coupons, store coupons and manufacturers coupons, and then they go to the store on a "double your coupon" day....or even some stores do a "every coupon is worth $1.00" day, I guess. I want to figure out when those days are, but I don't know how. However, I do know that Albertson's is one of the stores that does it and also has lots or coupons...at least that's what I have noticed from watching extreme couponing. I just don't know how to find out when they have those double days. I have never called them to find out though.

I love the idea...but it just seems like SOOOO much work. I don't think I could take on such a daunting task. I mean, some of those women say they work on their "couponing" 30-40 hours a week!

ETA: Forgot to mention that they also wait until the things they have coupons for are at their absolute lowest sale price. Like, I'm sure you have seen them get Vitamin Water or Powerade for free. They wait til it's on sale for $1 each and then use a 50cents of coupon on a double day....

  • it "happens", yes, when you combine a store coupon, a mfg coupon, sales, and also any rebates that go along with it. you can also price match.

for example..one of the easiest things that is free ALL THE TIME is cream cheese. that's because it goes on sale for $2 every so often. you can almost always find a $1 packages of cream cheese coupon....albertsons doubles coupons..so you buy your cream cheese for $2, take $1 off from the mfg coupon, double and get another $1 off.

for the coupons that are ridic, such as $1 off 5 pkg's...they may or may not work. combine the sale, etc..but a lot of times, when you buy multiples, you get register coupons that print with the receipt. those come and go, so you have to watch for when they come out (follow coupon websites to know when they are released, and their terms).

so i recently bought something along the lines of 12 tubes of toothpaste for $8, and i got $12 back in register rewards.....i'm making up numbers but it went something like this.......

buy 4 tubes in one transaction, get $2 back from register coupons (they're called "catalinas")...the coupon was for 75 cents off TWO tubes of toothpaste...double, to basically get 75cents off each tube. the tubes were on sale for 1.00. so...each tube cost me 25 cents out of pocket, but i got 50 cents *back* for each tooth paste too...resulting a negative 25 cents per tube. just make sure you buy in sets of 4, and have enough coupons to cover the transactions.

but getting money *back* from the purchases..you use *those* toward the food that generally doesn't have coupons...i.e. carrots, apples, spinach..etc...."regular" food. meat, bread, juice freeze well, rice a roni (which comes down to like 10 cents each, and is awesome for h when i'm not home) stores well. i almost never buy butter, and i give that away to my neighbor who bakes a lot...

meat goes on sale at safeway for BOGO often.... combine that with a "free shipping with sales over $50" from safeway.com, and "$10 off for new orders online", and you're golden. every house that i could possibly pass off as an address with (home, neighbors, parents, IL's, uncles house), i've accepted safeway.com deliveries for.

it takes a lot of work, but it's worth it (at least to me). and it's slightly fun. so EVEN IF i'm having a bad "money-saving-week", it works out, because i just think of it as an expense of having fun....even though i've never saved-less than what i paid for the coupons ($99 for 6 months of 5 copies of newspapers).

Do the ads in the newspapers actually have coupons often? When I first got interested in couponing, I bought a Sunday paper and there was literally no coupons in it. Just the ads for sales. I got confused....and discouraged.

there are different coupons for subscribers and in-store copies. if you're buying one-off's, check the newspaper before buying it. holiday weekends *usually* don't have coupon "inserts" (is what they're called...they're the little booklets that are 6 -10pagesish long). each week, it's normal to get 2-3, up to 5 "inserts" per newspapers...and that's where you get all the mfg coupons...such as things for tampons, soap, etc in one insert...the other will have the food coupons like digorno, or other frozen foods, etc... the inserts are put out by the major-parent companies such as proctor and gamble.

  • I do it! Jennlin taught me right before the show came out. I love it! But I go for the main essentials too. I don't have to buy shower gel for me or hubz for like a year. I get the Sunday Everett Herald. They have better coupons usually. I also have many people, family and friends giving me all their inserts from the paper, so basically I get my inserts for free. It's fun but can be time consuming. And Surfin Bride, on the Extreme Couponing show, usually they cash in rainchecks, go on doubler weeks at Albertsons, or their state automatically doubles their coupon. The site Jennlin recommended, Couponconnections, she told us all how she pulled it off. Didn't sound so fun! Lol! I think it's worth it but you have to set aside a little bit of time and definitely follow a blog.
