Anyone recently laid off? Vent & comments

Im a teacher/ was a teacher and thanks to the budget cuts, I was laid off this month.Super Angry I loved my job and my kids and it really sucks! This is week three being unemployed and I feel like I'm starting to lose it.

At first I was happy because now I'm a stay at home mom which I also love, but on the other hand I feel like I'm starting to panic. I'm not sure I'll be able to get back into teaching with the way districts in Texas are cutting. I've been skimming for jobs and it's ridiculous out there..... aren't there any salaried jobs anymore?

Uuuuugggh ...sorry I'm just nervous and frustrated

Re: Anyone recently laid off? Vent & comments

  • I got laid off, but I saw it coming.  I have migraines and after the FMLA expired I was laid off (it's not really being fired, I think, because there is nothing negative in my file). So, I have three months to find something else.  I am hoping to work part-time, although I need the full-work.  I am completely with you when it comes to salaried positions.  I am also finding a lot of full-time, no benefits.

I'm a nervous wreck, too.  I'm sorry to hear about your job loss.  It feels like we are one of many.

  • Unemployment has been a crazy roller coaster. Some days I feel like what's the point of getting out of the bed, other days I feel upbeat and positive. My only advice is to broaden your job search and look at other areas if you can. Hopefully you have a good support system. Hang in there, you're not alone.
  • I was a dental assistant for over six years and in 2009 I told my employer in May that I was expecting. Every one at work was excited and happy for me and my boss/office mgr. told me not to worry because my position would be there when I got back from maternity leave. I ended up leaving work in October because they thought it best because I was slowing down at work, etc. I end up having my daughter, Sophia in December and was expecting to come back in March. They did not pay for my maternity leave either. Anyways, I ended up having some post partum depression and had to take an extra month off. My boss told me to call back in April and when I did she was like, "I am sorry but we don't have any work for you." I was in shock and I ended up getting unemployment last year and have been on it still to this day bascially on the extension program. It is upsetting about what happened to me after being promised my job back. I did not know I would have post partum which is common. The way I was treated too I felt was disgusting. My employer put that I quit my job when they had to give a reason on the unemployment app as to why I was discharged. I just thought it was sneaky...I could not believe how they could lie. I am glad I was given the unemployment. My hubby and I are blessed by our daughter but still I am sad how things happened. I am hoping to get back into some type of work soon. Michigan is not that great when it comes to jobs and we have a high unemployment rate. Sorry about my ramblings everyone...LOL!! I hope you guys are lucky to find another job...:)

Yes, unemployment is!! Just calling when you have a question, etc is ridiculous. You get put on hold or told to call back another time. I had to give medical records etc when I first applied...Good luck!!

  • Thanks ladies, glad to know I'm not alone .....hopefully this feeling will pass and I can enjoy my husband and 2 yr old.

  • I moved from Dallas to Chicago (for my husband's job) right after graduating in 2009, got certified for Illinois and have been unable to even get an interview for a teaching job. The cuts and amount of debt in Illinois is disastrous!! I applied to 16 districts this fall and had one phone interview over the summer. I am nannying right now as I can't afford to randomly substitute.

I see you're in San Antonio and don't know if you would move around Texas, but I have a good friend teaching in Dallas ISD and they just got a decent sized grant to hire a bunch of new teachers.

  • When I was laid off 2 years ago I started blogging about it since I was going out of my mind and probably bordering on depression... it was an awesome outlet to help me deal with the day-to-day stress of not working.

You may want to consider something similar.. if you don't want it to be on line, journaling can sometimes help.

The link to my old blog is in my siggy.

  • Yeah, I was laid off about 2 months ago. I'm not a teacher, but I worked in education/with the public schools.

The worst part for me  is that I can't pull DS out of daycare because if I DO find a job, it will be impossible to get him back in (waitlists). I've been doing a mix of sending him in and keeping him home, but I obviously am paying even for the days he's home. It suuuucks.

Meanwhile, on the days I'm home alone, I am bored out of my freaking mind. I've been looking for jobs like crazy, but it's so hard since I feel like I don't really know many people in the city. Ugh. I feel you.
