Gardeners Please come in!

I'm an aspiring gardner, especially since we finally have a home that I can garden in. Although I have loved my container gardens I'm ready to really dig!  Walking down the street the other day I saw some landscapers planting bulbs.  Is this the time to do that? And where do you get your bulbs?  I'm mostly interested in tulips and lillies.  TIA!

Re: Gardeners Please come in!

  • This is the time to plant bulbs, before frost.  We got some tulip bulbs from the garden center at Walmart.  Hopefully they'll come up.  Any store with a garden center should have lots of bulbs right now...I don't think you'll have trouble finding them.

  • Awesome!  Now how deep should I plant them?  And are they supposed to be planted in a particular direction (like skinny part down) or do I just throw them in a hole? And how close together should they be? I could probably google all of this, but I'm here...

There should be directions on the package.  I think it varies for different types of bulbs.

  • In this area I believe the window for ideal bulb planting is Halloween through Thanksgiving.  You don't want to go too early because we do have some unusually warm falls.  The depth is on the bag, make sure you use bulb booster when you plant.  It will make a big difference in the size of your blooms.

If you don't know this, many bulbs naturalize (daffodils, crocuses, snowdrops, etc.), most tulips do not, so you will need to replant every third or fourth year (some varieties every other year).  If you look for Darwin tulips, they will need replanting less frequently.

  • Tulips, daffoldils, crocus, hyacinth are good to plant now

I plant my lillies in spring and they bloom in the summer.

I go to Behnkes for bulbs most often, and sometimes Johnsons.

I love Homestead Gardens but it's pretty far away

  • I didn't see the where part of your question. I love merrifield garden center in falls church (corner of Lee hwy and gallows). The staff there is incredibly knowledgeable and helpful. I was there last week and they had a huge selection of tulips and other bulbs to choose from. They are a bit more expensive, but if you talk to someone there you will more than make up the difference in acquired knowledge.
  • Great!! Thanks for all the words of wisdom!  I greatly appreciate it.   See, I come from a family of black thumbs so I know little to nothing about this gardening thing!  I might be back here often for more advice!
  • i'm late, but here's my .02:

-I get my bulbs in a mixed variety pack (usually the doubles mix) from Costco.  It's really a great deal

-also, be aware that tulips are quite delicious to wildlife (deer, rabbits).  The former owner of our house planted a fair amount of tulips & I generally only see 1 bloom a year.  The bunnies eat the rest of the buds.  For this reason, plus the replanting reason, I have learned to love daffodils (they aren't just yellow anymore!!).  I can't speak to the tastiness of other bulbs...(I do know tullips are supposed to be an edible flower for humans even but daffodils are poisonious so maybe that's why they don't like ti?)
