Internet Question

We are thinking of ditching our cable/internet provider b/c we are sick of paying nearly $200/month.  Unfortunately, it is the only cable provider available in the city so switching is not an option.

We can live without cable tv, but we need internet at home.  We are considering just getting a 3G or 4G "hotspot" device through our cell phone provider instead of keeping our wireless high speed at home.  Does anyone else do this as your main home internet?  Is it comparable to regular home internet?

Re: Internet Question

  • Kyle has a hotspot that he uses for work. Currently he's paying for the hotspot as a work expense and then we have cable internet for home. He's locked into a contract with the hotspot, so even when he quits his job we'll have to keep the hotspot. I've convinced him that we should drop the cable internet because it doesn't make sense to have two internet sources at home.

We'll probably make this switch within the next two weeks so I can give you a better review at that point. Kyle did warn me that in his opinion the hotspot won't be as fast as our cable internet (we are in a 4G area).

I have a friend who uses a hotspot as her home internet and she loves it. But she lives in the country where cable internet isn't an option, so I think part of her love stems from her ability to have any type of internet.

  • I have been without cable for almost 2 years. I won't go back. If you are near an area where there is Clear I would give it a try. That is what we use and it is has been really reliable and good. Since it runs off Cell phone towers it can be a little slow during peak times but it's usually very fast. We stream Netflix, Hulu, Ted Talks and other things from it.

  • Thanks guys, this is exactly the type of feedback I was looking for!

Clear looks like a good option. I will have to compare specs with Verizon, etc., but I like the idea of just paying a monthly surcharge for the device rather than paying for it all upfront.  We would likely just be streaming shows & movies too, so it's great to hear that Clear supports that type of internet usage well.

abarber, I'm anxious to hear your feedback on speed with the hotspot vs. your regular home internet.  Keep me posted!

  • I will say with clear and netflix when their is high usage the quality goes done a bit, but it isn't unwatchable. Once the bandwith goes up it gets clearer.

Also if you are ditching cable so many shows are now online. I watch Project Runway and Modern family online every week a day late.

It's funny. I just got off the phone with Kyle. He was calling to tell me that he just canceled our internet, so I will have a review sooner rather than later.

That's what I figured!  I like several CBS shows and I only recently realized that they have a really good website with full episodes.  The one thing I will really miss is HBO, but saving SO much money on cable seems worth it to wait for seasons to be released to Netflix (we will probably keep DVD service in addition to streaming.)  Oh, sports will be tough too but I guess there are always sports bars.

Cue Twilight Zone music! Ha, well that's good news for me anyway!

  • We have one of these at work and are running a 10 person office off of it.  It works great - a bajillion times better than the craptastic service we get from Verizon on a T1.

Wow, that's certainly a great testament to its efficacy. Thanks!

  • you might be able to get the HBO shows on Hulu. they have alot of shows on there
  • Kyle and I both used the hotspot last night and both thought that it was just as fast as our cable internet. Kyle thinks that he might has had problems with it previously because he had been accessing it with his work tablet that is just much slower than his home laptop in general.

So overall it worked great for us. Our hotspot is through Verizon.

  • Barbett - thanks, I will have to check on that.

abarber - that's great news, thanks for the feedback!
