We are relocating to the Houston Area. My DH will be working on Smith. We currently have our 6 yr old( girl) in Catholic school & would like to continue. We also have a 2nd child ( boy) who will start K in the fall. Looking was down the road at HS....where is the place to live where you are in a good neighbor hoods, with good/ great public school if we end up going that route, but also close enough to the Catholic HS. One area we are looking at is the Woodlands, but it looks like the nearest Catholic HS is about 22 miles away ( St. Pius x) Is it a pain to get to in the mornings/ afteroons?
Thanks!!
Re: catholic HS
Yes, the travel to and from the Woodlands to that area would be pretty brutal in the afternoons....45 is a MESS that time of day. Though depending upon where you lived, you could possibly take Hardy and it might not be AS bad.
Have you sourced this site: http://www.archgh.org/Find-a-school/ It lists all the Catholic schools in the Houston area.
I think if I had it my way, and $ was not a factor, I would move to Katy or the Memorial area (Spring Branch south of 10) and send my daughter to Duchesne. But it is pretty expensive, probably the most expensive Catholic school in Houston....my friend that went there all the way through said it was about 20K a year when she graduated (after the required extra fees/books/supplies/uniforms/etc). But it's an EXCELLENT school.
My daughter is in K at a Catholic school on the South side and we are very happy with it. It's reasonably priced and the class sizes are nice and small (13-14 kids) which is very important to me.
ETA: For what it's worth, a lot of the parents at my school end up sending their HSers to a nearby Lutheran HS. After all, Lutheran is just Catholic-light...LOL. Just something to possibly consider as you put down roots.
I'm not trying to be snarky (because I hate to be snarky to newcomers), but we don't have short-term memory loss. We remember you, and your several recent posts asking the same questions each time.
Have you had any luck narrowing your options down based on the many, many suggestions you've received?
Traffic will be annoying down 45, but if your husband is already headed downtown for work, it won't be that much of a detour to drop the kids off at St Pius.
I grew up in The Woodlands and went to St. Pius X for high school. It's not close, but I wouldn't say it was a pain to get to. When I was there (and I'm sure it's still the case) there were a lot of kids from SPX in The Woodlands and we all carpooled, so it was no big deal.

The Catholic school in the Woodlands may have a high school one day as the population of the area changes. I know more and more people are going non-public for a variety of reason, despite how good the schools are up here. Just a thought.
I agree with PP on the Lutheran options if you mainly are looking for a non-public, parochial option... I'm not Catholic/Lutheran but have heard good things about Condordia Lutheran in Tomball, which would not be too bad of a drive from The Woodlands.
But, if the Catholic HS is very important, you might want to look at living closer into town and not in one of the suburbs. There are some great areas of Houston that would put you much closer to this school.
There's a plan to build a Catholic HS in Spring, not too far from The Woodlands. They plan to be open by August 2013. Very close to there is Northwood Catholic school, which goes up through 8th grade.
melrrr is one of the least snarkier posters we have
You don't go to the national boards much then if you thought she was being snarky.

Thanks! Good to know.
Thanks for the helpful information!
Thanks!!

While your angles have changed some, it's still a lot of "where should I live if I want good public schools." and people--myself included--have given you a lot of good suggestions. Just come in and say "hey, it's me again, now we're trying to decide between x and y." Do you need help finding the old posts to go back and review? We can try and do that for you if that would be helpful. Hell, you can ask sixteen million questions!! Anything is better than people coming on to the board purely to cash in on plum district referral credits!
agree!
I'm no expert on private schools. We did a lot of looking and decided to buy a more expensive house and go public. The costs of some of them are CRAZY! If you want good public schools where your DH can be at work in under 30 minutes I would look at zip codes 77024 (95% of this zip code goes to great schools for elementary, jr, and high school. 77055 (only homes zoned to Memorial High) and 77079 zoned to Stratford. It's hard to find what I call the "trifecta" (all 3 schools highly rated) unless you're willing to spend in the $450K+ range.. and most of that is the +. Great schools on a budget and still not a killer traffic to down town... Katy.
The Woodlands is beautiful, but that's a far commute...
Bellaire has a wonderful high school. However, you're looking in the same price range or higher.
Unless you have something less snarky & helpful to say don't reply on my post or look at my post. The snarky, condescending comments are not appreciated! Moving your family away from all they know - their grandparent, cousins, & friends - let alone all I have known is a huge deal!!! The more information I have the better decisions that can be made. Sorry if you can not appreciate that.
Then you can just ignore me when I say I apologize for giving you the wrong impression because I truly intended no snark in any of my posts. What I was getting as is this is a small, close-knit board. We remember people and we remember posts. You are clearly new to the nest, which is fine, and may not have realized that there's not a lot of page/post turnover on this board as with some of the national boards, and it's the same people coming back day after day. I've given a several suggestions in response to your posts and have tried to be helpful. I guess I've done all I can do. Good luck with your move.
you've probably gotten all the good suggestions you are going to get.
seriously, houston is the epitomy of urban sprawl, and i wouldn't consider living in the woodlands unless your dh is prepared for 45 (sometimes more) minute commute each way. that being said, if you're set on st pius he could easily drop them off. there is a catholic school in the conroe/willis area (north of the woodlands) called sacred heart. a good friend sends both her kids there and loves it.
there are far too many different areas where you could live based on your budget/needs/wants. we get newcomers on this board all.the.time. asking where they should live because they are thinking of moving to houston. with littie info, its hard for us to give a good answer.
