XP from RI: Realtor to find a rental?

Hey Ladies!  I popped over a few weeks ago because I thought we might be relocating.  Well, I got the job!  So, now it is frantic find a house and find a nanny. Do people use realtors/brokers to find rentals in your area?  It would be really helpful to have someone on the ground up there to get places lined up before I arrived.  I plan on coming in a couple weeks to look for places.  Any suggestions where I'd look?H and I are actually leaning towards Attleboro, MA.  I'd be working in Warwick, RI and he's going to be working in Boston.   TIA!

Re: XP from RI: Realtor to find a rental?

  • Congrats on the new job!  What kind of work do you do?

I've actually never rented here so I'll leave that advice to the other ladies.  I'm a Craig's List proponent myself, but don't know from experience how useful it is for rentals in this area.

My only personal experience with Attleboro is going down there for volleyball tournaments.  The friends we have in that area seem to like it though and there's lots of retail in the area.  I wouldn't envy your husband his commute into Boston though.  Does it make sense to find more of a middle ground between your two commutes?

I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

  • Congrats on your job!

I agree with Rock though, your husband's commute is going to suck, especially if he drives. I have no idea what traffic on 95 through that area is like. 93N into the city will be completely crawling at rush hour. But there is a commuter rail in Attleboro, which would be an hour from there to South Station, then however long it takes him to walk or take other public transit to his building.

When we were looking for rentals we used realtor.com. Craigs List usually has a ton of ads as well but you have to be careful with the scams. I don't know if realtors will represent you when looking for rentals or not. We didn't use one.

  • This area isn't too far from me. Lots of people take the train into Boston from Attleboro. It's long, but doable. Both my parents made this commute at some point in their careers. The commute is going to be long for both of you, but you picked a pretty central spot.
I don't have any specific recs for real estate agents. Congrats & good luck with the move.

  • Attleboro/Sharon are about as far as we can go because it will be a commute for me too.  He'll be commuting to government center.  He will take the commuter rail/T, so no driving.

  • Check out Franklin if he's going to take the T. And North Attleboro (which is nicer than Attleboro but not much more $).

I really like Franklin, but it's not very convenient to Warwick. Mansfield is nice too.

True. I think of Franklin as so close to RI, but I guess Woonsocket is not that close to Warwick.

OP, Foxboro is awesome. My and H and I used to live there and loved it. It's only 30 minutes from Warwick and closer for your H.

  • The Hubs and I relocated from NC in August and did not have ANY time to look at apartments in person before we moved.  We scoured craigslist while also getting a family friend, also a real estate agent in Boston, to look at MLS #s of rentals with our specifications.  She ended up looking at a few places for us, even the Craigslist house we ended up renting - signed lease the night we moved up from NC.  I would DEFINITELY recommend a real estate agent, he/she will be able to really narrow down the possibilities and locations for you when you give your specifications and tell her what you do and don't like about the apartments that she's sending via email for you to critique and comment on.
