Told you I had a lot today.
So how do you get rid of the Paci with a thumb sucker? L does both depending her mood but only when sleeping. I do not give her the paci during the day and she doesn't suck her thumb unless she is super tired.
Am I doomed? I wanted to rid us of the paci by 1 but am afraid we will get full blown thumb sucking and I can't cut off her thumbs.
Re: Paci & thumb sucking
This was me my mom swears on her life if she could do it all over again she would have just let me keep the paci and not have listened to everyone that said if she got rid of it I would just forget about it. I was a thumb sucker for a LONG time. And it was at night so even when I was like 7 I would wake up with it in my mouth. She went to great extremes to try and get me to stop sucking my thumb and evetually I had to wear socks on my hands.
I would rather have a kid with a paci in their mouth for a while longer than a thumb sucker. Their thumbs get super dirty and they don't care if they are clean or not they are going to stick them in their mouth. They can also change their natural bite with a thumb more than they can with a paci.
No matter what, you are going to find people with strong opinions on each side...in the end....it doesn't really matter....do what you feel most comfortable with.
This is true too. I had to have braces twice. The first time from 4-7th grade b/c of the thumb sucking so late. Then again Jr./Sr. Year of highschool because my wisdom teeth grew in and crowded everything.
My oldest loved his bink, until he was just about to turn 3. We told him he didn't need it anymore, and he said fine and forgot about it. No joke. I was shocked. I'm letting DS2 hang on to his (as it helps us the parents out of a lot of jams) until he's 3 too. Then I'm going to suggest he get rid of it. If he agrees like #1 did, I'll be amazed, again. Cross your fingers.
Otherwise he only takes it at night and when we're at home and he's throwing a super tantrum (which he lovingly never throws anywhere else).
Yeah, I'm a pushover when it comes to the bink. It's just so soooooothing. And #1 has perfect teeth per his dentist. 3 years of bink sucking did nothing to that kid.
thanks to jennied
My neice was a thumb sucker. The dentist had to put this bar at the top of her mouth to get her to stop sucking her thumb because she wouldn't stop and it was destroying her top teeth. She's 6.
My kid still uses his paci when sleeping (he's 20 months). First I said at a year it's gone, then I waited cause I thought we were going to be driving to PA next month, and now that we aren't, I feel like I need to take it away. However, I've been noticing that when he doesn't have it, and he's just chilling, watching TV or whatever, he will suck on his fingers. If it falls out of the crib at night, I will find him sucking on his hands. So, I'm also worried that if the paci goes away he will start sucking on his fingers instead which is something I don't want. It doesn't bother me that much that he still has it since it's not a 24/7 thing like some kids. He knows he's only allowed to have it for sleeping. And he goes and gets his blankie and paci when he's ready to sleep. It's probably become too much of a habit, but it is what it is. When he turns 2, we may drop it cold turkey, but until then, I'm not too worried.
If it were me, I'd let her keep the paci. My cousin's daughter still sucks her thumb and she's almost EIGHT. It's bad. You can totally tell her teeth are jacked and they have battled with her for years about it. Even buying her a new bike and other items. All had to be returned b/c she just won't stop.
I'd keep the paci until you are confident she wont' replace it with her hands. If she just has it at night/nap time, there's no giant rush.
love is for every her, love is for every him, love is for everyone
My cousin took her son to the dentist and had the dentist tell him he needed to give up his paci. It worked. I'm not sure what age - maybe 2 1/2? I think the authority of the dentist was much more powerful - kind of like teachers maybe? Kids listen to them better than parents? IDK.
Right now, DS gets his paci for bedtime and naps. The kid really needs that extra help to get him calmed down and ready for sleep. The thing is like magic. If he wakes up in the night, he searches for it, pops it back in, and goes right back to sleep. We may try to get rid of it at 18 months, but if he is teething or sick, I will wait.
This is what we had to do. DD ended up being about 3 years and 4 months or so old. We had tried about 4 times prior to that, and she just wasn't ready.
How ironic that the only questions you have answered have to do with paci & thumb sucking. Is this your product?
