Vacuum recs for carpet and hardwood?

Our entire first floor is hardwood and I have area rugs.  I want a vacuum that I can use on the area rugs and directly on the hardwood.  I've just been sweeping the hardwoods with a broom but it doesn't seem to get the dust and dirt all the way up.  Anyone have any recs?

  • Oreck & Hoover both have self-adjusting ones. I have used the Oreck & liked it fine, and am considering buying the Hoover. I generally like their vacuums.

Thanks for this!  I'm going to look into this hoover.  Looks fantastic.

Ok. I looked some more and am wondering if the hoover stick (link) looks just as good, but extremely cheaper.  It also saves having to buy bags constently.  Plus it's cordless which is a good thing in my opinon.  I wonder what the benefits are of bagless vs a bagged version.

I'm going to have to think about this.  Sorry for hijacking OP's post!

  • As a general rule, cordless vacuums have less power. I like my bagless, but you need to empty them before they get very full. Sometimes there's a bit of an explosion when you take out the canister! Lol.

  • I know it is pricey but I LOVE LOVE LOVE my Dyson.  It has the most power in any vacuum I've ever used.  And it switches from carpet to hard floor with one switch while still running.  We have lots of hardwood in our home too.  And I love that you just empty the canister rather than a bag
