Closing going down....

Ok, so part of our contract on our house was that the seller paid our closing costs, so I'm just wondering....how does the whole closing thing work. Is it like the movies? This is my first home.

Re: Closing going down....

  • We went in about 10 minutes before our scheduled closing time. They had a coffee pot so H had some coffee. A lady popped her head out and said our paperwork wasn't finished yet so it would be a short wait.

Our REA was a dumbfuuck and he blew off closing although we wanted him there. He forgot to tell us he was blowing it off. We only used him because we'd get a commission rebate check for about $1500.

An hour later they took us into a conference room and said that they were still waiting on some info to be faxed over but we could go ahead and get started.

It was a lot  of signing papers. The closing officer would give us an explanation about what each document said and then glared at me as I read it over before I signed.

One of the documents had the fees breakdown and the total cost of the purchase price + interest we'd pay over the life of the loan, then a breakdown of when it would be paid off if we made extra payments. The breakdown included commissions and closing costs paid by the seller.  She asked for our down payment check towards the end.

Signing took about 45 minutes. Then she handed us each a set of keys and we were done. Then I decided I wanted pictures so I made her pose with DH handing him the key.

I think in some states you have to wait 3 days after closing to get the key, though?

  • I've never seen a  closing in the movies.  It's pretty much you signing papers.
  • Our closing was at our attorney's office. We were there, the attorney, our REA, the seller and the seller's agent. We signed paper's that also required the seller's signature first. Seller was paying all closing costs so he handed over his check and him and his agent left. We then signed another crazy stack of papers and then finally got our keys.

Got a call an hour later to come back and sign some forms that were missed. And then we were done. All in all took about a hour and a half.

  • Yea, she said that we get our keys the day that we sign, so we sign at 5 pm, and I am SOOOO planning on starting to move the basics in as soon as we are done (because I'm a dork like that) and (thanx to other nesties ideas, changing our locks then too), but I didn't even think of taking a pic of her handing DF the keys, I'm gonna have to do that. :P Thank you though, that gives me an idea of what to expect. So, I should probably show up a little bit before 5 then, but not outragiously early?
