donation/marketing

My daycare wants to host a dinner and auction to raise money for the teachers bonus. Some of the moms did not think the auction would work because there is not an option for a tax right off but I thought it was a great way to market your business. We all know how successful word-of-mouth advertising can be.

If you know anyone that would be interested in donating a service or a product to parents to market their business please reply to this message or pm me. The parents live throughout Houston, the daycare is located downtown and 90% of the parents are attorneys.

The event will take place next April.

Re: donation/marketing

  • is your daycare a for-profit business?
  • I'm just curious why the daycare wouldn't charge a high enough rate to cover the cost of the teachers?  I'm assuming that this is a business not a public service type of daycare...

  • This might be a naive question from a first time mom who hasn't yet dealt w/ daycare, but Georgia will start MDO next year.  Am I expected to do fundraising in addition to paying for daycare and giving her teachers holiday gifts??  If so, I'd rather just pony up some extra money rather than go to a dinner or auction.  Or just pay a higher monthly rate.

  • if your child is at a non-profit/church-sponsored school, there will probably be an organized fundraising effort.  it just depends on how it's set up.  they are generally more than happy to take a check from you...lol.

i would have serious eyerolling for any for-profit business asking for donations to help with any expense at all... but in the case of a non-profit it's a different situation.

yes, many early childhood (MDO and preK) programs are 501c3s, as well as private schools. schools have galas and other fundraisers over the course of the year. while you may be up for ponying up more money, not all parents will. i can't speak for most schools (and I think ours is probably an anomaly) but at Tru's school, fundraisers all contribute directly to the classrooms or go in to the capital fund, which does projects like build new buildings or repair old ones. none of the additional fundraising outside tuition pays for operating expenses.

ETA: Tru's school is not a MDO. It's pre-k through high school.

F's MDO asks for additional donations from the parents to fund things like the fall festival, monthly teacher appreciation lunches, holiday gifts for the teachers, etc...  There is a suggested donation amount, but it is not required.  I donated more than asked because the majority of the money goes to the teachers.  I much prefer a straight money donation to a fundraiser.  C would prefer they just raise tuition to meet the needs and I see his point as well.

The only type of "fundraising" Mason's MDO does is book orders from Scholastic.  I know that the more orders they get the more free books for the school they receive but I'm not sure if they get a monetary profit from the orders.  We have only bought books once and I was pretty displeased with the quality of Scholastic books now, they used to be great when I was a kid, so I won't buy them again.

The only other time they have asked for money is for things for the kids, like every few months they will have a pizza day and ask for $3 per kid to cover the cost of pizza and drinks.

The MDO Maddy attends has never had a fundraising event or solicited donations, other than parents sign up to bring napkins, plates, etc for parties.

This, except Connor attends a full day Pre-K/daycare. It is church based and we are only asked to provide supplies for class parties. There are no fundraisers, but there is an optional donation of an item for the church's annual silent auction.

When my cousin worked at a private, parochial school, it was a regular practice for the parents to collect donations for teacher bonuses and/or Christmas presents. One year each teacher received several hundred dollars.

  • Our MDO has a fall & spring fundraiser which raises money for the school and helps to keep tuition low. When they do things like their pumpkin patch, etc. they ask if the kids can bring in a small amount (it was $2 for the patch this year). We also give a small gift to the teachers at Christmas and at the end of the school year because we appreciate them.

  • It is a little complicated. The school is for-profit but it pays an operating fee to the non-profit church that it operates out of. In the past (2 years ago) they were doing auctions to raise money for the teachers but were asking businesses to donate to the church not the school. They were running the money through the church but gave it to the teachers that do not work for the church. The IRS stepped in because this is illegal and the owner of the school was fined. The owner is not providing a bonus or anything extra for the teachers but in the past the school would raise $45,000+ at the auction that was distributed between all of the teachers depending on their years of services.

Now the moms are trying to think of ways to legally raise money for the teachers so that they can continue to receive a bonus. Some of the items that brought the most money were classroom created items so that is something we can do but it is not realistic to think we can have business donate to a for-profit event unless they are getting something out of it. ie. marketing to parents

Last year everyone just wrote checks and we collected $27,000 but we were trying to get close to the original collection of $45,000+.
