Matched (Even if you didn't read it, you can discuss this)

I had been saving this up for the Matched discussion that never happened, so now's as good a time as any.

In the book, society pairs down all art to 100 works (100 paintings, 100 songs, 100 poems, 100 books) and destroys everything else.

If you were on the committee that chose the 100, which works of art would you put on the list?

Re: Matched (Even if you didn't read it, you can discuss this)

  • Wow... that would be a tough choice!

    I'd make sure:

Van Gogh was in the 100 paintings - he went crazy and lost an ear for his art... he deserves to be represented.

Ace of Base was in the 100 songs - if society is so strict they are limiting art then you need some crazy fun music to listen to.

Naruda was in the 100 poems - purely favoritism on my part. The guy was amazing.

and Jane Eyre was in the 100 books - because let's face it, that book is amazing and the character of Jane was incredibly progressive for the time period.

I would definitely not be qualified to be making those decisions, but I LOVE that you said Ace of Base!

  • Now that's an intriguing question.

I don't know that I could pick art or music, but I could give some literary ideas. I think you'd have to have a comprehensive science book, a comprehensive history book, Jane Eyre (good one, Panda), Dante's Inferno, Milton's Paradise Lost, Beowulf, some variety of Shakespeare, Grimm's Fairytales, Pride and Prejudice (just 'cause I love that one), and though I don't consider it "just" a book, I'd put the Bible in there.

I know some of the above are technically poems, but for poems I'd say Alfred Lord Tennyson's Lady of Shalot, some kind of Ralph Waldo Emerson, some kind of e.E.Cummings, Frost's The Road Not Taken...

that's all I can think of at the moment.

This was one of my first thoughts.

    Poe's For Annie.

    A German Requiem by Brahms.

Monet's Bridge over a pool of water lillies:

  • Harry Potter better be in the books.

    haha! What about Twilight?

  • This would be like asking me to choose between my right arm and my left.  There's no way in hell I could pick because there are so many different types of art out there and what one person hates, another may be incredibly passionate about.

But now I'm intrigued about this book....

Twilight is most definitely NOT INVITED to the top 100!

  • I would never be able to pick just 100 books, works of art, or songs. Geez just peek at my hard drive on my laptop with my 25+GB of music, I think that's the biggest indication of my indecisiveness and widespread love of music. Art and books would be even worse!

    Yes

I am a Twilight fan, but even I can admit that it would have NO place in the top 100 books.
