Br: Carseats

Moms of babies already out of their infant carrier, did you switch your baby around to be front facing or rear.

New laws say babies should be rear facing until 2 now but I rarely see anyone do that. We are looking into carseats for T and some only face forward.

TIA

Re: Br: Carseats

  • Weston is still rear facing and I plan on keeping him that way until he is 2.  I could be wrong but I didn't think it was a law, just a recommendation.

  • I think they have to (by law) stay rear-facing until 1 or a certain weight and the up til 2 is highly recommended but not quite a law, but I could be wrong on that. I think some of those laws are dependent on your state, so you might want to look into that. Phoenix is still rear facing and will be until 2.
  • It is rear facing until 1 by law, until 2 by recommendation. However, Ellie is now forward facing, as she is tall and her head already reaches the top of the car seat (they say once the top of their head reaches the top of the carseat it's a good time to flip them.)

If you're going to switch out of the infant seat, how about a convertible seat? That will keep you from having to buy yet another seat when she goes to forward facing.

  • Carseat regulations are based on age and weight, and vary by state.  The only law I'm aware of is the rear-facing until 1.  The rear-facing until 2 thing is guidline rather than a rule at this point, and only came to light within the last few months.  Sam is currenlty rear-facing because our car allows for it, but I was seriously considering front-facing her for space reasons. ETA:  We have a convertible so it makes things a little more flexible.

You're right Kelly. In WI the law is rear facing until 1 year. 2 years is recommended, but you don't have to . The classes I've taken so far told us that if we can keep them RF till they're 2, it's better, but it's not always possible depending on the size of the kid.

    Thanks Michelle!

Our car seat sits rear facing up to 40 pounds, so even with Weston being a big boy, I am confident he won't reach the weight limit before he turns 2.  Our car seat then converts to a front facing one up to 65 pounds.
